Fly Alitalia non-stop with a Boeing 767-300/ER

They arent old at all mate!

The safest aircraft would be the Boeing 747 or the Boeing 777 or 767! Delta Airlines and American Airlines have great safety records. If you are willing to stop, avoid British Airspace!!! It is one of the most expensive airspace's to fly through in the world. If you want a stop-over, Lufthansa is my first choice!

Don't think only about a nonstop, but consider a two part journey. London is easy to fly to and about as safe as DC. Think about flying to Gatwick or Heathrow. Stay there overnight, then continue on British Air or Alitalia to Roma. If you must fly nonstop, then look at Delta or United.

Personally, I might choose to fly to London and take the train to Roma. Much more fun. This is based on my personal experience flying Los Angeles to Florence. We fly LAX to London and continue on to Pisa Airport the next day. Good luck.

Anyone but Alitalia. On strike over 100 days per year, unproductive and unhappy workers, and mediocre service.

With government subsides no longer permitted, this airline's a time bomb. You don't want to be hold a ticket the day they finally annouce termination of flights. Pan Am, Eastern, Sabena, etc...

I think German Lufthansa is very safe and pretty inexpensive... I always fly with them anywhere I need to go.

I recommend a bargain flight to London and then a train to Stansted (other side of City) and a bargain flight to Rome on Ryanair. I did this for 2/3 the price of rest of family who flew direct 14 hrs SFO to Rome. Had nicer trip. Traveled alone and felt totally safe - but then I perceive European travel to be about the same as finding my way around San Francisco.

Go to www.airsafe.com, it has links to fatal events and incidents by airlines, aircraft type etc. it also will show what airlines and airplanes are the safest. But don't worry too much, you have a better chance of winning the lottery or getting struck by lightning than dying in an airplane crash. Have a safe flight.
