The official size limit for carry-on luggage on most airlines is 22" x 14" x 9"

In general, the one carry-on bag must not exceed 45 linear inches (length + width + height) or weigh more than 40 lbs.

Carry-on Baggage
You can carry on one bag plus one personal item per passenger as long as it:

Weighs less than 40 pounds (18 kg).
Does not exceed 45 inches when you total length plus width plus height.
Fits easily into our SizeWise® unit (approximately 22"x14"x9").
Fits in an overhead bin or underneath the seat in front of you.

I've taken up to 2 carry- ons, plus my purse, more than once on an airplane. I've gotten away with it.

The size of a large duffle bag or small suitcase.

World Traveler
Your allowed one carry-on which is the size of the bag the flight attendant Carry's on, but it can be smaller. I believe it is 22 inches. Some airlines have changed the weight so you may have to call the airline your traveling on to verify. Your also allowed to bring on one personal item like a back pack, purse, briefcase or smaller. Food is free and not counted as a carry on so if you bring one of the small cooler type lunch boxes you can take that for free, but only with food.
They are getting more strick about the carry ons and it is actually a federal rule of one carry on and one personal item.

There are many sizes, just try to pack light if you're going on an airport. Read the info. on your brochure in the airline you're taking.

angel_of_the_united_states
Let's just say that it can be no larger than an overstuffed backpack. . .You should check, though, if you are going to be traveling soon.

There's a general size (able to fit under the seat in front of you), but each airline (and airplane) has different specs. Check with your airline's website.

i have worked at an airport and now work in a department store selling luggage and most major airlines will accept hand luggage that measures no more than 115cm (when adding the length, height and depth) and should weigh no more than 7kg. But airlines do vary so the best bet would be to check with your airline. enjoy your travels!

a good size is a book bag or brief case. Anything larger and you run the risk of it getting checked.

vim
Shirley, your best bet is to call or web-visit the specific airline(s) you´ll be flying. For most airlines, there are very specific measurements. The bottom line is it should fit under the seat of the row in front of you, which becomes tinier by the day. So, take a tiny, tiny, tiny carry on and a very large purse! Good flying!

minerva
this depends on the airline. it should tell you on the airlines websites or on your ticket if you already have one.

southrntrnzplnt
The guidelines for all carry on baggage is set by the FAA. The 2 piece policy is a FEDERAL REGULATION.

http://www.faa.gov/passengers/prepare_fly/baggage/
The maximum size carry-on bag for most airlines is 45 linear inches (the total of the height, width, and depth of the bag). Anything larger should be checked.
No oversize packages or luggage can be stowed onboard.
**this is approximately 22"x14"x9'**

If an airline is caught with someone taking a larger item or too many items onboard, they are fined $10,000 for each offense. So for those ladies with purses...put them inside another bag if you already have 2. We have to follow the Federal Regulations and so should you.

The maximum combined linear measurement (L + W + H) of the carry-on bag is 51 inches (130 cm). The maximum weight of the carry-on bag is 40 pounds (18 kg).
