I spent six months studying in Siberia (during the winter!). A companion and I got our passports and visas and rented an apartment in Novosibirsk. We spent a lot of time traveling to a northern city, called Tomsk, where we helped make improvements local orphanages.
The entire experience is too incredible to sum up in Yahoo Answers! I had already studied Russian, but became more conversant. I met new and interesting people who were incredibly deep and compassionate. I learned an entire way of living that was more foreign & different than I ever would have imagined.
I ran outside, (wearing only swimming trunks) when the temperature was -50 Celsius! I found out that most people eat banannas upside-down. I played chess with a 6 year old named Anatoly who kicked my butt every single time we played!
I made a friend who was paid only in Gasoline, due to the economic crisis. He and a friend partnered together to build a gas station- but were stifled because the Russian Mafia threatened to burn it down if they didn't hand over half of their profits.
I experienced tubeworms and roundworms (not very fun). I was yelled at frequently for being an American- I was reported to the police for being a spy (not sure who turned me in, but it was not true) and I sat in a chair answering questions in Russian to a policeman who was pointing an AK-47 at me. I watched the exchange rate go from 6 roubles to the dollar to 27 roubles to the dollar in a period of weeks. I waited in line for bread. |

My favorite vacations are usually when I get a 30 train pass for a country, book the first and last night hotel - then just wander thru the country asking people I meet for recommendations of 'off the beaten path' places. |

While visiting Holland, we met many friendly British people. We also loved the seafood in Holland. We also very much admired the beautiful graffiti there. The graffiti was breathtaking; it was like a never-ending outdoor art gallery. We took more photos of the graffiti than of anything else. |
