Can a plane stop in air and be still?
my friend and I are having an argument ($50 at stake) about whether a plane can stop and be still in mid-air. Can anyone please answer this question, a pilot or someone very sure about this,...

What stops commercial airliners from providing parachutes to passengers?

If you watch "Air-Crash Investigation" on National Geographic, you'd realise that in 1 out of 4 disasters, the pilot has complete knowledge that the aircraft is about to crash, so wouldnt it be logical to provide a parachute to passenger so that they can ditch and save themselves. Even if this saves 1% of all fatalities wouldnt it be worth doing?
Additional Details
DUH! Obviously the parachutes I'm wondering wouldnt not be the same ones' that you jump with during sky-diving etc. It wouldnt be so difficult to innovate upon the current design and come up with small/practicals ones that work.

Another point about altitude doesnt quite hold: http://hypertextbook.com/facts/2004/JerardKneifatiHayek.shtml

Good idea, but won't happen.

I think something called "common sense", is stopping the airlines from giving parachutes to passengers.

Do you think airlines are suicidals? Or you think that you are a genius and just discovered that?

And also, please tell me, what would prevent passengers from being ingested by the engines??? Thouight about that???
What about decompression? And passengers barely pay attention to the emergency instructions, do you think they will know how to use a parachute? when to open it?

C'mon, genius. I think boeing, airbus, NASA, NSTC and the airlines , they know a little more than you do about safety.

Intelligence !!!

But if you want to jump out of an aluminum tube going 450 mph - maybe they will let you be the guinea pig.

Not the "parachutes on passenger airlines" thing again...

1) Without proper training, there is no way to exit a full slate of passengers safely from the plane with parachutes--it's not a "design" issue on the parachute deployment, it's a "people exiting the craft" deployment

2) The "design" issue you mention in your notes--not gonna happen--not at the level needed for little old ladies and children to safely use -- and not just the chute, but to safelyl get in to the harness as well.

3) There's no room on a commercial airliner for passengers to stand up and get into a parachute harness.

4) PANIC!!!!!!

5) The structure of the craft is not condusive to parachute jumps.

6) The added weight would restrict greatly the amount of luggage and/or people who could be on the plane, thus making it economically impossible to work (yes, an economic argument--the only one I'll make)

7) The sudden shifting in weght, air pressure, etc, would make it very difficult for the pilot to maintain the stability of the craft

8) Airplane crashes occur on the ground and begin to "materialize" close to the ground. Parachutes don't work well there. Airplane crashes don't "materialize" at 30,000 feet

9) Passenger airplanes tend to travel at 30,000 feet and above. There's not enough oxygen at that altitude, so people whould pass out within moments of the aircraft door opening.

10) Oh, yeah... passenger jet aircraft doors cannot be opened from the inside at high altitutdes for obvious safety reasons.

Emergency parachutes on passenger planes would actually cause much more problems than they could ever hope to solve. Your safest bet is, by far, a well-trained pilot and a sound air traffic controller backed by a prepared crew.

Airplanes are the safest way to travel. Could they be safer? Sure. Would I like that? You bet. Are personal parachutes the way? No way.

Archimedes Rules OK!!
I believe the answer you are looking for is 'common sense'

It is not practical. Sky divers have hours of training.

Parachutes cannot function efficiently for dives from aircraft flying more than 2500 feet above ground level.

The atmosphere above 2500ft is severely cold and oxygen supply is scarce for humans to survive.

Commercial airlines fly at much higher altitudes- up to 45,000 feet above ground.

Hence, jumping with a parachute from that altitude will kill a person anyway due to the freezing cold often in minus double digits and, the scarcity of oxygen. Air currents at that altitude will also toss a human like a plastic bag caught in wind. This means imminent death.

Also, parachutes have to be opened about 10 seconds after exiting an aircraft. Most passengers would be unable to do so, since they would be at very high altitudes that would make such a movement of hands, impossible.

And, the panic it would trigger with 100 or more passengers including women and kids on board, if they were asked to jump off a plane with a parachute.

Yes, 1 out of all 4 pilots involved in a disaster know it's about to happen. But pilots are well trained to search for other safe methods to save crew and passengers, such as attempt landing on whatever surface possible- including water. It is only in extreme cases where the pilot loses control and the aircraft crashes.

Ok I understand that if it only saved one life it would be worth it but..... for one the price of tickets would go up. If one person died while trying to put on the chute or scrambled for it it would cost millions.
