What time do I need to be at the airport for a 7 AM departure?

I have not flown since before 9/11/01. Do I have to arrive an hour early or does it matter as long I am there by 7 AM?
Additional Details
Oh man, I HATE getting up early. I might as well not go to bed. Oh well, I can sleep on the plane right?
Great answers all, thanks.

Depends on the airport and if it's a domestic or international flight. Domestic flights require you to check in a MINIMUM of 30-45 minutes before the flight. International flights is 90-120 minutes.

Boarding usually begins 30 minutes ahead of departure time (45 minutes for international flights). By 7 AM, the doors will be closed and the airplane should be on its way to the runway.

I fly out of airports that require check-in a minimum of 30 minutes before the flight. That means I get to the airport AT LEAST 90 minutes early to give myself time to park, wait 30 minutes in line to check my luggage, another 20 minutes in line at security, and 10 minutes making my way to the gate just as boarding begins. Depending on your departure airport, lines tend to be long that time of the morning, so it's not a bad idea to plan on being there by 5:00 to 5:15 AM just to be safe.

Yes it does matter. Depending on the size of the airport,1 1/2 to two 2 hours in advance. It is always wise to get there early because you don't know how long the lines are until you actually show up.

If you fly abroad, give a little more time for check in. If you fly domestic when it's not a holiday, 1 to 1/2 is sufficient as long as you don't fly American airlines. They sucks. I flew Northwest a week ago from Austin to Baltimore. I was at the airport 1 &1/2 hrs, I still had plenty of time because they checked in pretty fast.

Use airport curbside check in. It costs $2. You can also use the machine at the airport for eticket. That also saves lots of time too. Remember, there is a limit for luggage and carry on.
