-- Read a good book.
-- Make friends on the plane... Talk to people about other cultures.

BTW, I'm taking a 16 hour flight too in a month... It'll be interesting to see how it goes.

Yeah, you can read. But don't forget on these long flights, they turned the lights out for people to sleep. So if you want to read, you have to use the personal light, which is like this spotlight on you while it's dark all around and it's not comfortable lighting.
And then when they think people should wake, they turn the lights on and people start moving around a lot so you can't sleep anymore.
You don't have much choice but to do as the other passengers. Many people who can't sleep, watch movies.

Bring a book or two, definitely an mp3 player, and a pillow... I went on a 14-hour flight to Tokyo and those definitely came in handy. it's also nice when you're sitting next to a friend, someone to talk to.

On long plane rides I always bring at least 2 big magazines, 1 book, my laptop, watch 1 or 2 plane movies (only if they're good), read the airline magazine, and look out the window/do nothing/eat. This kills a lot of time... If you're the type who manages to sleep on planes then try so as well.

Jenn
read. invest in a video ipod. take a sleeping pill. play sudoku or do some crossword puzzles.

If the plane is comfortable ie first class, stay up the whole night before and sleep. If it is not comfortable this will be a miserable experience to be tired on the the plane so get plenty of sleep before. If you have a laptop bring it and watch a movie. I don't think they have power for them though so make sure it has a full charge.

Before military flights I used to stay up for about 30 hours before the flight but I could lay down on them. One time I took an all night 16 hour bus ride that I could not sleep on. It sucked bad.

Take a book or a hand held video game to pass time, talk with seatmates, sleep for part of the trip. I'm sure there will also be some meals or snacks served and possibly a movie available depending on the airline. I hope you don't end up with small children sitting behind you kicking the back of your seat or throwing screaming fits.

Bring a book? Watch the offered movie, and hope it is not one you have already seen:)
I can never sleep on planes so on my last "never ending" flight I ended up playing black jack with a 10 yr old kid:) No money involved, but if there had been, I would have arrived home quite broke!!!! lol
Just talk to the people around you...they are just as bored as you are!

I am not good at reading on a plane----too much going on around me. And, I do not easily sleep on long flights. So----------the sleeping pill is a great invention. It was not good for me, (should have been moving around some) but, a friend gave me 2 sleeping pills on a long flight, and I slept 8 hours of an 11 hour flight. So nice---------------------.

Keep yourself occupied by the many varied activities on board the plane. Tired? Take a nap. Rest for your adventure in the new country.

blue_rose1786
Books, mp3 players, snacks that you enjoy (because u never know whats on the plane)
I personally find that on long rides invest in a mini massager that you can use to massage your legs, your back and neck. You really can't get up and walk and some people get stiff.
Also bring ear plugs for annoying people when ur trying to sleep, and wear loose comfortable clothing.

Play "I Spy" with that business traveler next to you (the one that keeps putting on his headphones). You can also try to see how many times you can kick the seat in front of you before the person in that seat turns around and says something. Bring a mirror and you can pull out nose hairs, or you can trim your toenails (they are allowing tweezers and manicure kits through security nowadays). And most importantly, if you are on the inside seat, either the middle or the window, drink LOTS and LOTS of coffee. Then you can kill some time by getting up and going to the bathroom at least twice every hour (that can total 32 times for the flight! Go you!).

Can be very boring. I used to be on the plane for many hours - although not 16 at any one time.

I tried to kill time by reading - magazines, newspapers, books, etc - any material that comes to hand.
