What will happen if I'm late for my flight?

I have to change terminals in Houston and have been told since I have 53 minutes between flights it will be a stretch making it. So what if I don't make it? Will I be able to take a later flight or lose my ticket or be charged extra? I've never flown before. I know nothing.

As long as your first flight is on time, you should be ok. You'll have to run fast though. There is a tram thing that you have to take to change terminals in Houston, so, that'll take a few extra minutes. But, you should be ok. Look up a map of the airport and know where the terminals are that you're flying to and from. Then you'll know kinda where you need to go once you get off the plane. If you do end up being late, the airline will put you on the next flight, usually with no charge. But, sometimes that's not til the next day.

It's always better to do what you can to avoid missing the flight. Even if they put you on another flight no charge, you don't know if the next few flights are all sold out, or a storm might come in or whatever. Then your whole trip is ruined. Try to make it to your flight. The longer you delay, the more chances something goes wrong. I had to change planes in Houston, on Continental, and the other CO flight was in a different terminal and I had only 15 minutes because my first flight came in late. I had to run a long way, then upstairs to the train, then back downstairs. I ran all the way but I made it. And no, they don't wait for you.

Each airport has minimal connecting time between flights, you can ask what is the MCT at your airport at the airport information. If you miss you next flight because you had less time, then the airline will rebook you on the next possible flight; but if you had enough time then you'd have to pay a penalty for rebooking or buy a new ticket. Check what's written under "Restrictions" in your ticket. However, 53 minutes is a whole lot of time, even for the big airports such as Frankfurt or JFK.

they will try to put you on the next available flight, then beat your luggage up real badly and send it to cleveland for three days.

The carrier will do what it can to get you on a later flight. Typically there will be no extra charge.

you will be ok, ruuuuuuuuunnnnnnnnnnnn

You meant change plane and not terminals

?
They will book you on the next available flight. Usually no extra cost, especially if the delay was caused by a late connection.

53 minutes between flights should be plenty of time to make it. even if it is a big airport. if there is a major delay though, they will book you on the next flight available. no need to worry.

LilyLouise
As long as you're not late on your own accord, they will normally transfer you to another flight. However, you might not be able to get out until later that day or even the next day. So I suggest that you have at least one hour or more between your connections. That will give you time to use the restroom or grab a bite to eat.
