What would happen if I put a cake in the mail from California to Wisconsin?

Two issues here. The type of cake and how you plan to wrap it. If it is a sheet type cake or in a 9x13 inch pan ---let it cool a while then turn the pan upside down onto Saran Wrap--turn it over and let cool. If you ice it--let the icing dry a while. Wrap in Saran Wrap--then wrap in foil. Put in a box with wadded up newspapers all around. I really think it would survive pretty well. All of this done with care, of course. I know that I would try it. (If it is damaged, the taste will not change and the thought would still be there) lol

Aaah, pooor little cake.... If you send it Priority/expedited, or Fed-ex, or something quick, and pack it VERY carefully...nah, it's gonna die. I am not sure this is a great idea -fudge travels well... Or you could just send him the picture..you know, "A chocolate cake has been baked/eaten in your name... " If you just want credit for the "thought"... Pooor little chocolate cake... Have a wonderful time at your prom!Brownies travel well, too. What?? You didn't mention chocolate?? There really is no other flavor...

I think your cake has a good chance of being destroyed. If you are wanting a cake for him perhaps you should consider ordering one from a baker in his area and having it delivered to him.

Yes well I think the picture will survive the postal service better than the cake.

My mother used to send me stuff like this in the mail all the time when I was in college - across country.

Brownies work really well. bar cookies work really well.

A sheet cake could work OK, but the frosting will get smushed - so writing on the frosting will be more difficult. Wrap in foil, then wrap in plastic (zip log bags, or two zip lock bags taped together. Freeze before shipment. pack with lots of cushioning around the cake.

Once I even received a layer cake, but it came in pieces that I had to frost and put together myself - two rounds, store bought icing, a flat spatula to ice the cake and candles!

Another option is to find a local baker in the town he is in and arrange to have a cake delivered to him - it would be fresh, pretty, and they could decorate it in any way you wanted.

And if none of that sounds like it would work for you, then I'd take a picture of the finished product, write a heartfelt letter and send it in a card with a promise of a cake when you see him.

Beware of mold!

I once had an internship in Tennessee for a couple of months. Before leaving New York, I bought some bagels and mailed them to new address. It must have gotten awfully hot in transit, because they were covered in fuzzy green mold.
