What would you do if you were afraid of heights but going on a 26 hour plane ride?

i promised a friend of mine i'd visit her in her home country [south africa] and right now i'm raising money and getting prepared but i have never been on a plane before and i'm *so scared* of heights, i'm not sure how i will handle this. and not just that, but i'm also going solo. anyone have any tips on air travel?

Take meditation classes and brush up on techniques to calm yourself. Research airplane technology to understand the mechanics of take-off and descension.
If you experience turbulence, ímagine that you are simply in a cloud that wants to be a bit playful.
I have flown a bit much, and during the bumpy flights, I inhale and exhale, divert my attention by reading, listening to music, or talking to my husband.
I also pray silently. A biblical phrase that always comes to mind is "Oh ye of little faith" -Jesus uttered this to his disciples when they were on the rough sea and thought they would drown.
That biblical quote gets me through every time.
Don´t forget to enjoy the beautiful view of the heavens when you are above the clouds :-)

Enjoy your trip.

Once you are in the cabin, you can remain unaware of the height as long as you don't look out the window. Actually, even if you do, you may not react to it since it is kind of abstract because of loss of detail at that height. But if you feel yourself becoming anxious, just pull your focus in to the cabin and imagine that it is on the ground.

Also if you have enough time before your flight, there are some fairly easy counseling steps for dealing with phobias that could get you fixed before your flight.

Ignore the guy who said don't fly! Don't limit your life that way.

i wouldn't sit on a seat that's near the window

Sit on an aisle seat so you can't see out of the window.
Take an eye mask and try and get some sleep, and maybe an MP3 player or iPod to drown out background noise.

hmmm... for sure you wont be on the plane the ENTIRE 26 hours... you will have to get off... see what the airport has to offer and then just wait for the plane to start boarding again...

any ways.. going back to my answer... =p try to sleep the entire time... if you dont wanna sleep... watch the movie on the plane.. if no movie is showing... listen to music on the airplane radio or a music player( ipod) ... =p

dont sit next to the window when on the plane... and DONT LOOK OUTSIDE THE WINDOW WHEN TAKING OFF!!! trust me on this one...

hope this can help...

You won't be on one plane for the whole 26 hour for sure.you will have different flights connection.Maybe two or three. My advice, take your pilates or yoga mat with you and between the connection times get some moves to alleviate the stress and the fear.
Or if you are not that shy get into a conversation during the flight.
good luck

I pretend I am on the ground in a really cool train. I read books, watch a movie, make new friends even on a trip that long - just don't sit near the window seats or look out.

For Fun
I would take sleeping pills.
