About 20 years ago, I was flying from Guangzhou, China to Beijing, China on CAAC (airline no longer exists.) The aircraft was some wierd old Russian built plane. We were delayed because somebody had a caged pig as a carryon and wouldn't remove it. (not kidding....) Finally they disembarked the passenger with the pig and we took off. There was no air conditioning on the plane, plus everybody smoked, so the conditions were already unbearable. The airplane was extremely noisy and also smelled of fuel in the cabin. So I was already worried (lit cigarettes + jet fuel fumes = bad things happening.)
We crossed the tail end of a typhoon, so we had massive turbulence. When we were descending for Beijing, the plane suddenly went into a steep dive for five seconds and a few people were thrown about. A few passengers ended up puking. When we were in that steep dive, I thought we were all going to die in this obsolete Russian airplane. |

My wife and I were teaching on Little Diomede Island in the middle of the Bering Strait. We'd been to Nome for some medical attention and were returning in a light aircraft. There was a layer of stratus just above the top of the island and we were on top of it, looking for a hole to duck under. We needed to be careful because to go too far was to end up in Russia, where they go hunting with Migs. The temperature outside was -30 degrees f. As we were circling, I noticed bugs starting to hit the windscreen of the light aircraft. I looked some more and noticed that there was a sludge starting to come up over the cowling. We'd blown a propeller seal and all of the oil was leaving the engine. We turned for the mainland and started looking for a piece of pan ice to set the plane down on, but to no avail. We opted for a landing at the radar base at Tin City. As we were on final, the engine froze and we glided to a silent and scarey landing. We manged to make the apron of the strip and bounce onto the hard surface. We all walked away without a scratch, but it had our full and complete attention. |

We were on the last stretch home on our trip back from Germany, flying from Detroit to Toledo on a little puddle -hopper.
Right as we were speeding down the runway ready to take off, the engine on the right side fails. It just went totally silent. We already had a bit of lift at the time (maybe a few feet) and for that split second, I thought- we are gonna keep ascending, and I'm gonna die!
The worst part was after they unboarded us from the plane, a few maitenance guys came out on the tarmac, and spun the engine around a bit, and then boarded us back on the plane without fixing a single thing!
I was a nervous wreck the whole flight home... |

well.. i was going from bangor maine to st.louis mo and we were going to newark.. and it was the week in july where we had a lot of huge thunderstorms and even a small tornado.. and i was listening to "where'd you go" on my ipod when the airplane violently started dropping about 300 feet from a down draft.. the whole flight was a wreck because of the bad turbulence from the thunder clouds.. and it sucked because it was on a small emb 145 for continental.. so it was bad |

A red eye flight to Las Vegas..smaller plane more turbulence. One minute my husbands drink was in the glass and the next it was on his chest and lap!!I thought he was gonna flip!!He's always been a little scared to fly and that didn't help me convince him to fly to Europe or a long flight in the future. They say it's safer to fly than drive your car..but I'll stick to the larger airlines too,not sure why the fall from the sky would be about the same..HA..just kidding!! |

one time the plane was going up and down at a fast pace, i was in panic mode as much as everybody but then the announcer said it was turbulence, and i was like "that was some turbulence" the only thing i was happy was that i didn't wet my pants which was a huge accomplishment for me. |

Was going to Le manatotta
First they told us the engine was on fire, while we were soaring high above the Atlantic, you can imagine the fear. We were asked to put on our life jackets and prepare to swim to the shore, as we landed on the water....
Then i woke up from the dream. |

Not many, really. We were on our way to Korea (14 hour flight...ugh) and we had the WORST weather and the WORST pilot. Bad combination. It was as if our plane was flying through rocks, not clouds. It was like that the whole darn flight..I got scared when the plane had like 5~10-feet falls every so often. |

On my way back from the Philippines we were delayed 30 mins from taking off in Japan. At the last Minuit the load 8 middle eastern men in different seat through out the plane. About 9 hours into the flight two of the men got up and headed forward in the plane. Maybe 3 minutes go by and then the fasten seat belt signs came on and we hit turbulence and ti was hard turbulence it lasted for 30 minutes and it wasn't till after it stopped that the men came back to their seats i just knew I wasn't coming home. |
