When an aircraft lands late at night at an airport, does the pilot lock door and leave the key with someone?

No - why ????

Boiled Egg
It's got remote central locking. He just aims the keypad at the aircraft and it locks itself. The landing lights also flash. If a bird lands on the wing, the alarm goes off and all the neighbours look out from behind their curtains, swearing. The pilot has to run out in his dressing gown and slippers to turn the alarm off. All the neighbours give him dirty looks the next day.

for commercial planes... their is no key.... after 9-11 all commercial plane was fitted with bullet proof doors and the door is opened electronically by keypad codes. and when the plane is at RON or remain over night ... they don't look the cocpit door because maintenance people go in and out of the cockpit doing there routine checks. and if your question is about the cabin door... their is no key for that. the door lock can be opened from the inside or outside... just by pulling up the lever or turning the lever depending of the plane.

first of all let me clarify your question:

is it a light aircraft like a small plane? if it is, you normally lock it and place it inside or outside a hangar where it will be secured until its next trip

if it is a big one like a Boeing 747 they are not fitted with keys for the doors because of its enormous size (which most major arilines operate), it will be a different scenario based on the airline schecdules. In the Philippines; Philippine Airlines operates these planes and since its a big one it takes time to off load passenger baggages as well as service it by maintenance and clean the cabin interior and etc.
You will be surprised how much rest these planes get considering the trips they make. So for pilots their jobs are finished and other departments have to come in and do their job then, normally they only have a few hours to prepare the aircraft for its next trip, so maintenance personnel normally leaves the airplane on its parking slot in the terminal. Or if the next trip is still a couple of hours away they may tow it to a remote parking area where it will not hamper airport operations, sometimes they tow it back to the hangar if they have to do some repairs

Aircraft will be handover to the next pilot to fly.
Commercial aircraft fly usually back to back.
Private carrier, yes, he locks the aircraft and keeps the key.

Boiled Egg must live in a nicer neighbourhood than I do he didn't put the Club on the stearing wheel. And make sure you park in the correct place because you don't want the plane to get clamped.

happy
I hope so.
