When did all air hostesses become grumpy old cows?

Just an observation....I travel a lot. When I was younger, I remember young, energetic, friendly and very professional staff. Nowadays (the counter staff included), all I see in old, miserable cows more intent on gossiping and generally treating every question or query you have like its a battle.

No I am not referring to Easyjet.

Many of them have been on their jobs for 20 years or more, are now making good money and benefits & aren't about to quit as they approach retirement. Further, it used to be that people dressed up and put on their best manners to take a plane. Now it's like riding in a bus. Ozzy Osborne was right when he said that flying was like riding in an effing cattle truck.

Gee, thanks, I'm a flight attendant and don't really appreciate being put in a grumpy old cow category. You may remember that flight attendants were forced to retire at age 30 back in the old days. Well, equal opportunity laws did away with this years ago. The pay gets much better with seniority so many employees make a lifetime career of it. Funny, but most of the people I work with are basically kind and considerate unless provoked by a really hateful passenger. Perhaps you are expecting too much of your flight crew. All you need to do is sit in your seat, properly stow your luggage, say 'thanks' or 'no thanks' when something is offered to you, and I guarantee no flight attendant will have anything grumpy to say to you. They can't fix your flight connections, stop your baby from crying, let you stand and walk around when it is unsafe to do so, or continue to serve you alcohol when you appear tipsy. It's only a ride from point A to point B, and why does everyone care so much about every little detail of an airplane ride anyway? Furthermore, if I were ever riding as a passenger and an emergency were to arise, I would much rather be in the hands of one the seasoned 'old cows' than a giggly girl barely out of her teens.

The flight attendants seem to be getting angier as their pay gets lower, which leads to bad attitudes and poor service.

'cause they have have a union - -ever see the "girls" in atlantic city?"

radiancia
Sometimes lol - its funny how they'll be standing around talking about their spouses or coworkers right behind you - but they arent all grumpy and that.

mata123
Think their a "bit above" them self's these days excuse the pun!!

JayCe
I find them getting younger on some flights. But maybe nobody wants to be an air hostess except for the older ladies about to retire since it is tiring flying through so many time zones a day.

cowgirl
Our cows don't gossip.

that's because when u r a kid they treat you differently.......accept it...adults suck sometimes...

I think you have made an interesting observation, I travel between two locations often and I was thinking of the same a while ago. I think there are couple of reason for this, some pointed out by others like that fat that they are nicer to kids then adults. I remember the time when you got to be a certain height, weight, vital statistics to be an Air Host (politically correct term) but today the company could be sued for discrimination of they only employ using such criteria. Secondly, women have ventured into other professions and are very successful in them, unlike a time when there were jobs for sexes. Then other factors like more airlines so more staff so compromises might have been made, and finally the once who were young when we were kids are getting older as we do and are still possibly in the profession.
