It depends on the destination and when the peak travel season is there. Flights in January are generally cheaper because fewer people travel in the winter, unless it's to a tropical destination. Aug/Sept is a very popular time for people to travel, so the prices will be higher.
Booking early can help if there's a sale - you just have to be aware. Sign up for email sale alerts, and also use AirFareWatchdog, which tells you whether fares will go up or down over time. |

I have booked several flights over the past year from the US to Sweden. I started booking early then discovered that by waiting until 14 days before my flight, I could find cheaper flights. I think when airlines haven't filled the seats on a flight they will lower prices just before the departure date.
Also, I use a site kayak.com which gives me prices from many airlines in one matrix. They have a convenient flight update service that allows you to watch fares for several flights at once and sends email updates to you.
Some last pieces of advice... airlines often lower prices at the beginning of the week and compete for the next few days. I find that buying a ticket on Tuesday or Wednesday usually gets me cheaper flights. And of course, flying on a Monday-Wednesday or Sunday usually costs less, too.
I suggest you just start researching the patterns of airfare periodically. You can always use the data you find for future flights. |

It is nearly always cheaper to book well in advance, especially for long haul flights where people usually book a year in advance to secure the cheapest fares. |
