Check with your specific airline for policies.

Generally, when children are a certain age (which varies), they can travel alone. And yes, the flight attendants handle these children personally. The children have to be escorted by them and passed from one to another.

The children also generally have to wear a lanyard with their flight papers so they are easy to find.

When a minor flies alone, someone from the airline will guide them to their next connecting flight. Or, if there is a layover, someone will guide you to an area just for kids. I flew once my myself when I was 14 and it was good. Someone was always with me. It was fun!

Yes, you have to pay extra for escort service. when you make reservations let the rep know the age of the children and request this service. It normally cost $25 -$50 more per child. They are escorted by one of the reps of the airline on and off the plane and can only be picked up by the person you put on your form.

Your parent needs to CALL the airline and arrange for you to fly as an "unaccompanied minor." There is a fee of between $60.00 AND $100.00 for this. ONLY if your parent calls and makes these arrrangements will a flight attendant be assigned to assist you and be responsible for you.

I used to fly once a year by myself when I was like 6-11. The flight attendants usually take pretty good care of you or your child. I don't know how it works when you get off of the plane these days, when I was flying whoever you were meeting was allowed to come right into the terminal area so they'd be there RIGHT when you get off the plane. You may be able to make arrangements for an adult to meet the child as they get off of the plane.

I'm sure as a young child it would be fairly scary going through all the security....I'm 19 and still get a little nervous I'm going to do something 'wrong'.

You can get a supervisor type person, I remember my boyfriends mum organised for him to have one when he went to England, but I think they cost. Ring the airline or airport to ask about such a service.

There is a minimum age where minors can fly unaccompanied. I don't know if it is universal, or each airline sets their own. With United, it used to be 5. Arrangements need to be made in advance & someone needs to be there to meet the child on arrival.

Yes, the flight attendant will accompany the child to the correct seat on the plane after the child checks in for the flight. The flight attendant will assist the child in deplaning and escort them to the adult who is authorized to accept them. That adult has to be listed in advance by the person originally putting the child on the plane. The receiving adult must show ID to accept the child. The child wears a badge that identifies him/her as a minor travelling unaccompanied. The child also wears a plastic packet on a lanyard with the info tucked inside. The info is who put him/her on the plane and who is authorized to receive the child.
