Because if you don't then other people stand in front of you and block your view.
Try it sometime... I have, and this always happens!
Your way makes more sense, it's just that newbie travelers ruin it for everyone. |

I never stand right next to the carousel. I always stand a few feet away...mainly because I don't want to be hit by some big guy not paying attention to where he is putting his suitcase after he brings it off the carousel. (I had that happen to me once when I was little and my dad almost punched the guy lol) |

because people are afraid of the luggage carousel...they think that if you aren't standing right next to the thing, your luggage will fly by before you can get to it and it will never come back out again. |

Yeah, I've always thought about this.
However, I being of a relatively young age can understand the wonder and mystique of the carousel. I mean, big spinning metal blades are pretty amazing to look at.
In China I kept throwing my spare Yuan on the carousel and people kept flocking over to get it while we were waiting for our bags.
People stand near it because it's interesting to look at. People generally are also impatient are sure they will be the first to get their bags. I've learned to just wait it out. |

I never really understood that one either. I also don't get why First class passengers have to get their drinks before everyone can get on the plane and be seated. I always cropdust first class for this very reason. |

lol good question. i always stand back and when i see my bag the fun starts. I start yelling and screaming "THAT's MY BAG!!!" and run through the crowd and get it. When i pick it up i swing it around erratically and its like how the ocean split when Moses walked through, everyone moves out of the faster than you can say "excuse me". Then i walk out casually and calmly like nothing happened. Its soooo fun! Except when the guards see you and give you dirty looks. |

Another problem is that airlines and airport authorities don't tell people that first class and business class passengers and high level frequent flyers get their bags out first. So the other poeple might aswell just stand back and let these people get their bags and get out of the way.
People also want to get out of the airport quickly and especially make it to customs/imigration before the next guy to avoid standing in lines especially if you have come in on one of the first flights ofg the morning and the airport will be empty for you if you are first off the plane with your bags. But considering most people spend nearly a whole day on a plane and are going to spend another day or two sleeping off jet lagg what is another 10 - 20 minutes waiting for your bags?
I also think that people are afraid that if they don't get their bags when they first appear one the carousell they will never see them again, when they actually just get sent around again. |
