I have to disagree with Moreno on "wait to the last min. and airlines discount to sell the seats off". This was true in the past, but in the future and moving forward this is not going to hold true any longer. Gradually the airlines are changing to where the ones who book in advance will get rewarded as opposed to those who wait last min.

Because airlines used to do this all too often that is how several of the airlines have found themselves in Bankruptcy status. This is one of the man reasons airlines are in financial troubles. Of course with 9/11 that didn’t help them, so that to is another reason. Some still have a fear of flying.

Travel is going up in price for last min. especially and I feel that those that plan in advance should get rewarded with the better rates. The reason the airlines has to change this around, empty seats on a flight or not is because to many people would wait last min. and the airlines would still have to pay X amount for airfare and they were losing money.

Airlines are also not running as many flights to various destinations as they have in the past. So for anyone who tells you that last min. is better they are incorrect on this. I have had several people who have noticed Las Vegas airfare prices going up and most peoples jaws hit the floor with "I'm not paying that much!". It is getting to give an idea from MSP here if you can get a flight to the east or west coast under $300.00 dollars it is going to be a good price.

If you do travel on say a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday those are lower travel dates. Really though the cost of a ticket is determined on so many factors such as availability for your dates, destination and if it is in high or low season, if it is scheduled air or if you have a charter option available from your city, fares that airline has running for your dates, etc.

I also wanted to note off of shawns advice saying midweek days are ALWAYS cheaper. This is not true, they usually are but if Monday is pretty sold out, but Sat. isn't then Sat. might be a better price. This is just a general rule of thumb on the midweek travel. It all comes down to your dates. If you are flexible with times to then you could save some money that way as well.

Best advice is book right away. The only thing I will say about booking in advance is I wouldn’t book as far out as a year. Wait until about 7 – 8 months prior. If extremely high travel dates this would be different of course. Hope this helps!

It really depends on how flexible in scelduling you are. You gotta be creative in your times and days. It's ALWAYS cheaper to fly mid week opposed to fri, sunday, etc. And if you have multiple airports in your city, check them all, including some of the commuter one's, it certainly can save some money

Hmmm... there ARE some good deals out there right now. It may be that the particular route that you're looking at is now higher because of changes in competition, etc.

In my experience airfares have only increased marginally over the past few years. I can still find $99 - 125 specials with various airlines... and I can still get terrible deals.

You kind of just have to shop around... and know that prices DO fluctuate based on several factors (including demand).
