When you go to an airport, is your suitcase security checked as well as your hand luggage?

I've always wondered this- and before anyone answers, I'm not up to anything illegal or risky- I am purely interested in what happens 'behind the scenes'.

When you go on an international flight one of the first things you do is check in your suitcase, which disappears on the conveyor belt behind the desk. You don't see it again until your destination (with luck!). What happens to it in the mean time?

Your hand luggage is viewed by X Ray when you walk through the metal detector, having emptied out your pockets- so what happens to your suitcase? It surely must be checked in some way?
Additional Details
Note: Surely it cannot go completely unchecked?! Your suitcase might be jammed full of TNT, heroin or machineguns!

They dont check the suitcases that go in the luggage hold which is ridiculous cos all a terrorist has to do is check a bag and put a bomb in it (Then get on the plane - presumably he plans to die so no red flags go up when a passenger doesnt turn up)

The security thing is ridiculous - they may as well not bother to check hand luggage and people goin g through security if luggage in the hold isn't checked

To the respondents who say everything is checked: State your sources please. You are mistaken

Edit: To Asker: Airlines are not concerned with drugs - immigration is concerned at the other end. They have sniffer dogs. It is a fact that cargo and freight ar only randomly checked and Baggage is randomly checked 80% of baggage is UNCHECKED. This is a fact and the thumbs down I have been receiving is cos the other peeps are shooting the messenger cos they don't like bad news.
ALL FREIGHT CARGO AND BAGGAGE IS NOT CHECKED. Can you imagine the cost of manpower to do that for every flight??
Say, 1,000 bags (two/three per passnger) on a full 747 with only two hours to do it in, during check in??
Practically nothing is checked that goes in the hold

It is checked the same way, also they may open it and search inside. If they do this, they will put a note in your suitcase letting you know that they searched it.

Everything is security checked now.

Depwends on Air line. With B. A. nothing is checked as it is not put on the plane unless its first or business class. Rest is left behind for another airline to deal with, Its called missing luggage by B. A.

I am shocked if it don't get checked! my suitcase just arrived a week after we landed at Bristol, ended up in Newcastle, and arrived yesterday and a very kind soul checked my case and helped himself to my valuables. the last time i seen my case was at Barcelona airport!!!

Very happily married.
It all gets checked.

alot of misconceptions here. EVERYTHING is sent through an x-ray machine, just like your carry on bags. it would be silly to x-ray the carry on bags, and not the checked baggage, in theory if they didn't scan each checked bag, someoen could slip by with a bomb in their suitcase, and the "controller" to the bomb in a carry on such as a laptop, or simple remote control device. so YES they scan everything. if you have something that looks suspicious in your suitcase they open it up also. as well as opening random bags to check inside. you get a sticker on your baggage tag and a note inside that says they opened and checked it.

I hope that everything is, what if you have a bomb in your luggage and it will blow up with a timer!!!

Thats why you see people using the hand luggage in the toilets to make the bombs.

Different airlines have different policies. Some suitcases and baggage you check in are passed through calibrated metal detectors that detect a specific amount of metal, such as bomb casings or guns.

Bagage may also be randomly passed by a sniffer dog for drugs and various other substances such as plastic explosives.

Other airlines run baggage through a x-ray machine similar to that when you pass you hand lugage through, although imaging software is used to identify suspect items.

All customs officials have the authority to open your suitcase on sound reasoning. They also have the authority to break security seals and padlocks.

So depending on what airline you fly with, your lugage may or may not be scanned/sniffed/opened.

They don't typically check it but they can. That's why when you get a lock on your suitcase you should gte the kind that they can open if need be so that they don't just cut it off. Some airports also have those x ray things for checked luggage as well.

I flew up here to Canada last year and all my baggage was checked. When I flew back down to states, my luggage was scanned and everything inside was photographed and was on a monitor. This was all my suitcases, carry-on and checked. When flying back to Canada, the security guards actually opened all my luggage and dug through everything and questioned me about every little detail. So yes, they are checked very thoroughly. And there is no way I even look like a terrorist... LOL.. am old 55 year old biddy.

Suitcases never checked, only asked at check in 'Did you pack them, has anyone had access to them?'

no nothing else gets checked thats it, my mom works on the ground near the planes so i would know.

EDIT: why did i get six thumbs down? i didnt say anything wrong i simply answerd his question.. but anyway it was checked already they dont check it again until you get back on the plane on your way home, and they would have found herione or whatever the first time around.
