Airlines give a bereavemet discount first of all. and so do car rental agencies. So rent a car when you get there and get your bereavement discount.
Call over the phone and ask for your discount. I don't know if you can get a bereavement discount online.
When my step father died, the airlines and car rental agency gave me a bereavement discount. |

If you have proof of his death (death cert) airlines sometimes give "bereavement" discounted fares to help people do just that...ask the airline |

Detroit is a HUGE NorthWest hub, so you're likely to get a good deal from going through them. Also try www.kayak.com it checks a lot of flight price search engines at the same time and you'll be able to find something good. Southwest is cheaper sometimes, but often times for myself it's not worth the service (lack of service) and unassigned seats to save a mere $15-20 bucks. |

Look for last-minute fare deals. Most airlines have sales on available seats on flights during the next week or two. Cheaptickets is OK but when I experienced trouble with some flights purchased from them, Cheaptickets did nothing to help me. Their support was rude and I am still mad! Anyway, where were we? Ahh yes, many airlines also have bereavement fares -- I am not sure if these rates extend to uncles or if they are limited to certain family members. To get these, you have to call the airlines and ask. (I was able to get a bereavement fare when my grandpa died). Good luck. |

call the airlines and tell them you are going to a funeral. Most of them have a funeral policy and you can get cheap airline tickets for this purpose. You will need proof which is usually something from the funeral home stating your relationship and an obituary. |

Airlines offer what is called a bereavement fare which is usually the lowest fare for that route.
In order to qualify you must be a member of the immediate family [ uncles qualify] and provide the name of the deceased and the name and phone number of the funeral home.
As a rule bereavement fares are open ended- you don't have to choose a return date.
As a previous poster mentioned since Detroit is a NWA hub I would call them first
Good Luck and sorry about your uncle |

I always recommend Southwest Airlines. They usually have the best fares for traveling within the US. Flying last minute is never cheap though. Your ticket on Southwest would be about $650 round-trip if you are trying to leave by tomorrow. Although airlines do offer a bereavement discount, so it could end up being much more affordable. |

United had some cheap airfare when I had to make reservations last minute for my grandfather's funeral. Tell them you are traveling for a death in the family and see if you can get a copy of the death certificate because some airlines will give you a discount if you show them a copy of that. |

also try the airlines websites directly that are not on kayak.
Also contact the airlines by phone and tell them why you want to get tickets they may have an emergency discount. I know that Southwest and American Airlines both have family emergency discounts. |
