To answer your question, I do these 2 things as much as possible:

1. Know which airlines are on the route I need. Many of the new low-cost airlines can only be booked via their own websites, so checking Orbitz, Kayak, CheapO, et. al. doesn't do much good for these.

2. Being flexible with my cities and dates. If, for example, I was in Buffalo, Detroit, or Toronto, and wanted to get to Europe in in a couple of weeks for under $400, I'd need to know about FlyGlobespan, a new airline flying from Hamilton, Ontario ($363 rt CAD to Manchester currently). Then from Manchester, for example, I'd need to know how to find the ultra-cheap airlines to the rest of Europe (which won't show up in other places) so I'd check WhichBudget.com. Checking nearby cities, and being flexible to travel on the cheapest dates, would save me big heap o' money in this case.

For a free flight to Cuba, masquerade as a moslem and plan a fake terrorist attack on the USA. Then wait for the Government to pick you up from your home and take you directly. You will also have free accomodation and legal advice.

It depends on what time of year you travel at. You may not want to travel at the peak of the season because the prices are much higher.

I've tried several and I prefer travelocity (btw, if you follow the "travel" link on Yahoo home page, it will take you to travelocity. Also, if your date are flexible, you can sometimes find better prices. Good luck and happy travels.

hotwire.com cheaptickets.com priceline.com orbitz.com these will find you the lowest fare for your travel...i think priceline lets you choose your price...

Unfortunately, there's no guaranteed site for the very lowest prices ALL of the time, ANY time. As someone has already mentioned, it depends on the time of year, the airline and the website.

The only way you'll find the very best deal for your flight is by researching the travel websites and airline websites one by one for the dates of travel in which you are going.

Usually what I do is tackle the travel websites first and mark down the airlines which offer flights to my destination (they will list them once you search on a site like Orbitz, for example). After searching Orbitz, Travelocity, Expedia and Hotwire I then take my list of airlines and go straight to their websites to see if the airfare they offer is better than the travel sites. Often times, they ARE and you can join a perks program through the airline as well (if you're a frequent flyer, it's a smart idea).

More often than not, you won't find the best deal on a big travel website like Orbitz, but sometimes it does happen -- and sometimes you can hit big when they're running a promo or special and you happen to fall within the specifications. That actually just happened to me this past April when I went to Vegas.

I travelled regularly to Western Canada from the East Coast of the U.S. last year. Through researching each time I found my best deal directly through Northwest Airlines several times, Air Canada one time and at Orbitz another. It really all depends.

One thing is for sure, if you're travel dates are flexible try to avoid flying on Friday-Monday. Tuesday, Weds and Thurs usually offer far lower rates.

There's no magic bullet, but we're working on it. As a rule of thumb, always book in advance and include a sat night stay. Here are my suggestions:

1)Try online agregators first such as kayak.com and farechase.com> gives you good idea of airlines that fly to your destination
2) Check LCCs (low cost carriers). Jetblue, Airtran, Southwest, Spirit, etc. Southwest for example does not allow their fares to display on ANY other website but their own
3) Check the major travel sites such as expedia, orbitz, travelocity, flights.com, priceline.com etc.
4)If flying international check for consolidator tickets (bulk rates provided to cetain websites/agents to sell excess capacity cheapoair.com and flights.com are good examples
**these fares are NOT available on airline websites
5)Finally check the airline website that had the lowest fare...sometimes you can earn double miles, save the booking fee, and have less of a hastle in the event of re-scheduling or cancelling

This pretty much covers everything
