It's going to depend on the plane and what you want!
-Large jumbo jets? I like first class.
-Least turbulence? Directly over the wing?
-Want more legroom and you're skinny? Emergency Exit row or behind a bulkhead.
-Wide shoulders in coach? Isle seat.
-Traveling with kids? near the lavatory.
-Turboprop planes? in front of the engines (noise) |

For less noise, sitting in the front has advatages. Also suring turbulence, you feel it less if you are sitting in the front. If you want more leg room, emergency exit seats are the way to go!!! I am just back from a flight and I was sitting in the exit row where I had plenty of Space.... |

Sit as far forward in the cabin as you can.
The noise level is greatest just behind the engines on modern jet aircraft. That is part of the reason why First Class is in the front of the aircraft. |

If the plane is a blimp and it's not under power, there is no sound. If you're on an aircraft that cruises faster than the speed of sound, then there is no sound. On a typical commerical airline, there is no place to sit with "no sound". Sound can be mitigated by sitting forward of the engines. Sound is also mitigated based on type of jet you're flying in.
In my experience, the very worst place to sit is the last 5 rows of an MD-80 commerical jet. The engine is right next to your window - not only blocking your view - but you'll be lucky to hear yourself talk it's so loud. |

As far forward as you can, which usually means 1st or business class, and upstairs on a 747. Try to avoid right over the wings or just behind the wings, although it doesn't make that much difference. I use noise-cancelling headphones, and they make an incredible difference, I wouldn't fly without them anymore, plus they sound 10 times better than those cheapos the airlines give you. |

Whenever I fly the only place I will sit is the cockpit |

Buy first class tickets and sit as close to the pilots 'cock'pit as possible |

On jets, further forward is best. On any propellor plane the noisiest place is right in line with the props. As a result, the back is usually much quieter on a prop plane. You also may get the bonus of a double seat to yourself, since all the business travellers like to sit at the front so they can be first off at the end of the flight! |
