Well, in a crash landing, you would be safer in the airport. Unless the plane was crashing into the airport, then you would be safer at home. What am I talking about? Anyways... The closer you are to a door, the better. Usually during a crash landing, the plane ends up burning to pieces, so almost everyone would die(its all just random). During an emergency landing, its better in an isle seat by the door. If you are super thin (like anorexic thin) then stay away from doors, because if the window brakes, you are gone for good. But I don't think you are super thin. Sorry. I keep on typing on and on. Oh there it is again. Oh and by the way, only a couple planes crash a year, so the odds are against your plane crashing.

Depends on the reason and physics of the crash as well as what the aircraft hits when it crashes honestly. Some crashes are nose first into the ground, so the logical answer in is in the rear. Some instances the aircraft rips in two once it hits the ground because the pilot attempted a belly landing with no landing gear and physics took over and the wing clipped the ground. BUT the main thing, is usually most people survive the initial crash, its the fire that kills the rest from the ruptured fuel lines. Jet fuel burns fast and hot and a loaded aircraft with passengers and luggage as well as cargo is a tinder box. So no matter where you sit, if the plane is engulfed with flames before you come to a stop, then no seat is safe theoretically. Sorry to be so graphic, but you just have to realize that it doesnt matter where you sit when it comes to a crash. BUT...you can't worry about such things when flying. If its gonna happen, then there's nothing you can do about it.

You can't live your life preparing for a crash. You just have to board, pray for a safe flight and if its your day to go, its your day to go unfortunately. Overall, aviation is the safest mode of transportation, its just more tragic when there is an accident because more people die at once. BUT, more people die on the roads in a day than during a years worth of incidences from small personal aircraft to large commercial aircraft's. You are 1 million times more likely to be struck by lightening than die in a plane crash.

I had always heard that any aisle seat between the wings had both the best chance of survival as well as best chance to get out.

It really depends on why the plane crashes. I have seen a lot of diagrams where people in one spot all live, and others where they are all randomly dispersed. I don't think there is a safest place, but I also don't think it is anything you ever have to worry about.

I believe it was on Dateline that it was determined seats on the back part of wings seemed best.

depends.

Takeoff-- full of fuel. Fire will be horrible.

In flight--speed. No way...

Landing--hopefully slow enough....

In the back of the plane would be the safest but you better hope it's on landing and not the rest of the flight. You should be safe.

At the back. I mean they dont often reverse into mountains do they ?

There isn't a "safe" place to sit on the airplane-best bet is to stay on the ground.

TomServo
The backward-facing seats are the safest.
