Which US airline is currently the best and/or second best to travel on???

Among the established air carriers it's personal preference more than anything. You can get as many different opinions as there are websites and people giving them. And next month it may be altogether different. You may have a great trip or a lousy trip one time and the opposite the next.
Look for price and a schedule that appeals to you and don't worry about it.

Best airlines according to me, in order:

Northwest Airlines
American Airlines (both very good)
USAirways
Continental Airlines (both good)
Delta Airlines (not so good)
Southwest Airlines (pretty bad, and in my experience pretty expensive.)
United Airlines (Absolutely the worst).

Granted, Southwest Airlines doesn't fly out of the city I live in, so I'd have to go to an airport an hour away. It's never cheaper though, and not worth the hassle of getting to that airport.

Unfortunately, United has a big hub in Denver and Delta has a big hub in Atlanta... both airlines on the bottom of my list. So you might have to take a sub-par airline or get a connecting flight.

Southwest is very affordable. The trick with them is to make sure to do an online check in the day before so you're in Group A for seating since they don't do assigned seats anymore.

Do not fly Continental. They've lost my luggage every time I've flown with them in the last 3 years. If you're not convinced, read this article: The airline is currently undergoing an investigation regarding the handling of lost luggage. On December 27, 2006, several hundred luggage with Continental tags were found in a dumpster outside of George Bush Airport in Texas as documented by the AP. [15]

If you can get a decent fair, Midwest Airlines would be the best. You would be flying on their 717 aircraft, which are all configured for first class flying. The buy on board food from Mader's is excellent. You will have to contact in Milwaukee, but I have never had a problem connecting in Milwaukee. I would rather connect there then in the really large airports.

I just got off of a Midwest flight from Kansas City to Tampa and back and I enjoyed every bit of the flying. I will use Midwest over and over.

Going to Denver in the winter is up to Mother Nature. Dont be a moron and try to blame the airlines if flights are cancelled due to bad weather (snow)..

By the way, American Airlines is the best, you can fly to more places on just one airline (the best way).

okay are you asking the best airline, or the best airline to fly atlanta - denver. flying from DEN - ATL your best choice is united or delta. But for the best airlines in the US:

United is ok. Southwest is good..good fares. I like JetBlue but their routes are limited. Check if they have a Denver route.

According to these guys ( http://www.airlinequality.com/ ) JetBlue is your best bet.
Their rankings haven't steered me wrong for my international travel, so I'd be willing to trust them on domestic flights as well.
