Being from the area, I'd say your best bets are Leeds Bradford or Teeside (I believe it's been renamed Durham Tees Valley). If you can't get to either of these, next best would be Newcastle. Leeds Bradford is the closest, and I believe Jet2.com do flights from Rome. By the time you factor in cost of transfers to York from Liverpool (which is 2 - 3 hours away and not on a direct train line) you may as well pay a little extra to get a little closer.

Air Travel XPERT!
Newcastle Airport on Easyjet. They fly direct to Ciampino Rome airport. Fro to 2nd July onwards, (Weekdays) the fares are less than 50 Euros.

The airport is 92.1 NM away from York. This is closer than any other intl airport. There is train access but changes are involved.
There is also a bus service that runs from Newcastle Upon Tyne centre to York direct (Most of The Time).
Have a good time in York!

liverpool to york is 101 miles about 2 hrs, why not go by train, you will find it more frequent.! hope this helps.

Manchester Airport is nearer than Liverpool, I'm sure there must be some cheap flights to Manchester.

Manchester and Leeds Bradford are probably both closer to York than Liverpool.

Yes, you can get National Express from Liverpool to Manchester and then from Manchester to York.

It's only about 20 quid on the train though.

Durham Tees valley airport.

Its a couple of hours by coach from Liverpool to York

leedsmikey
Leeds Bradford is nearest and they run an hourly shuttle service from York station.
