THE best Airline in the world is Singapore Airlines. NO contest.
Coming close, but still a way to go, is Cathay Pacific.
Thai Air has its moments. MAS (Malaysian) is OK on long haul (only!)
Lauda Air is "friendly", as is Virgin.
Most of the European airlines are "stuffy"
Middle Eastern-based airlines try their best.
Chinese and Indian airlines are hazardous for your health.
The worst (at least for in-flight service) are all headquartered in the USA.

Are you talking about national or international airline? My favourite airlines are Malaysia Air and Etihad Airways. Air Qantas are not affordable, but excellent. United Airlines and Northwest Airlines are fine. Air Transat is average. Can't stand Air Canada. Most of their staff have been working with them for too long. They are tired of serving passangers well. Their aircrafts are not suitable for the distance they cover. I won't fly them by choice. Never fly Garuda Indonisia.

I've flown American and Continental, and I very much prefer Continental in every way. For starters, Continental doesn't charge you for your meal, the planes are very comfortable, unlike American's sky bus. The crew are very attentive and friendly. I can't wait to go back to Caracas on Continental.

I totally agree with the person who said Singapore Air is the best. Comfortable, convenient, all the latest in entertainment technology, and the staff are the most helpful, knowledgable, (and beautiful!) of all airlines I've tried. And I agree with the other person who said Air Canada is the worst. The employees all seem disgruntled, and they are all ancient. The planes just have no redeeming qualities whatsoever... you might as well be on a bus.

No doubt Singapore Airlines is the best in every category. As for inflight meals, I like Air France most.

Firstly Air New Zealand, that's where I live. Then Qantas, from Australia.

Why: Air NZ has good service as does Qantas. Great to see companies from this far south getting to Europe and North America. Qantas has great safety record, AirNZ not so good, but the truth came out and management got booted.
