The Wright brothers built and flew the first airplane, but technically speaking DaVinci designed the first plane (did he build his design-that is what I'm unsure of).

The Wright Brothers, Orville and Wilbur made the first powered plane, the first man carrying one was built by Otto Lillenthal in the late 19th C. It was a glider and was launched from tops of hills, just like they do today. He died in an accident in one of them.
