Why Doesn't Airplane Companies... ?

Install parachutes under the seats of the plane chairs instead of makeshift flotation devices?

you would get sucked into the engine, you would die of a lack of oxygen, some people cant use parachutes (pregnent women, infants, obese people), the plane could not travel slow enough for anyone to jump safely, you would suffer frost bite and lose most of your limbs, and if you did make it to the ground in a 1 in a million chance, you would have suffered Hypoxia (where oxygen is not getting to the brain) and you would probably suffer permanent brain damage!

and then what happens when you hit the water?

I would rather die on the plane then any of those things happening!

Because if you jumped out of a jumbo jet at 35,000 feet, going 600 miles per hour, you would die. You're much safer inside the plane.

Also, commercial jet airliners almost never crash. It's extremely rare. And on the very rare occasions that they do crash, they don't just drop from the sky and give you 5 minutes to put on a parachute. Most fatalities happen on takeoff or landing, when you're way too close to the ground for a parachute to be useful.

A better question is why DO airlines allow pilots and air marshalls to carry guns? The likelihood of one of their guns causing a fatal air accident is astronomically higher than the likelihood of it preventing one.

1. Weight. Parachutes weigh a lot more than the flotation devices.

2. 99% of the passengers have no idea how to properly put on a parachute. The chaos and panic of a few hundred people all trying to put one on? And what about children and babies?

3. Altitude and speed. At 30,000 feet, you'd freeze outside the aircraft. At 600 mph, you'd probably slam into the tail section.

4. Time. Most airline crashes happen at take off or landing. No time. At altitude, if the plane was in such dire straights that you would want to bail out, it would already be too late. The plane would already be aluminum confetti floating to the ground, or heading straight down, in which case you'd be pinned to the seat by g-forces.

rhsaunders
Several reasons. Firstly, most accidents happen at low altitudes, where there would not be enough time to get everyone out of the plane -- let alone high enough for a parachute to be useful. Secondly, parachuting requires instruction; if you don't do it properly, you are in deep do-do. Thirdly, even in a water landing, flotation devices aren't of much use; rarely does a commercial aircraft go into the water in a manner such that people could survive.

Jayson
If they did it would cast millions to install all of these parachutes. Also all of the passenger would need to have training before taking off to learn how to use the parachutes. The plane is traveling around 500 mph and they would get sucked into the engines.

How many passengers do actually knows how to use the parachute or dive from a jetliner at high speed? All I know is that one may either get sucked by the jet engines or blown by the same if tried to jump off the rear door. In time of panic people stampede on ground, how much more while in flight. Chances of survival could be minimal.

Neil
Because they wouldn't do any good.

ADRIENNA
because they are not crazy!!!

I KNO RITE!i agree wit you! wat if you were flyin over the city! would you need a floatin device??thats stupid! i think domestic flights should install parachutes and international flights should have parachutes and floatuin devices!! VERY GOOD QUESTION!! I AGREE 100 percent
