The chances are higher that more people will travel so the price increases. People are more willing to pay a higher price to travel during that time. When people are in school, then the demand for travel is less so prices may be lower to try to attract people to travel. |

because they can charge what they like, and they will. |

Airlines tend to charge a lot more on school breaks because they know that students and young adults need to travel. For example, American Airlines, Dallas based, will charge you a lot from Dallas-Los Angeles on Spring Break because Los Angeles is a top Spring Break destination. They know you need to travel, and they know you will pay it. |

Basic economics of supply and demand.
Supply for air travel remains the same...usually similar numbers of flights (maybe some slight increases)...however, the demand for air travel goes up. With this increased demand comes increased price.
As long as people are willing to pay it, airlines are going to keep charging it. |

It's just like how they raise the cost of gas during holidays, people are willing to pay when they're on vacation. |

That is the basic thing. More people are going to tend to fly when school is out. Can't very well take the family on holiday when school is in.
So the airlines will have more people willing to pay whatever.... so they don't have to charge less to fill the plane. I currently live in the US. A flight to the UK can cost nothing after the first week in January.
Tourists are not going then as it is cold. The kids are in school, back to the job after the holidays, bills for Christmas need to be paid.
I went at Christmas and the fare was $2500 to come right back. But I booked it to stay one week more after the new year. I paid $650.
The point is even one day earlier or later coming and going can make a difference. You also want to play with what time of day you fly. An example..... flying even one day before school gets out can save much as well. |

prices go high during peak season. in the travel business, peak season refers to the time of the year where there are holidays/vacation breaks like summer, sch breaks, Christmas and the like. on the other hand, prices would go down during on off peak season normally during rainy days or when everybody else do not have enough time to travel. |
