Why are airlines now asking for a fee of £24 to make sure that passengers can sit together? Surely there are?

enough odd number groups travelling to ensure that most passengers will be sat together. It is only a click on the computer and the seating arrangement will automatically be worked out. The system has worked ok for years so what has altered except for the airline companies being greedy. what happens if a couple with children do not pay and have children that get airsick. Will the stranger they are sat next to be expected to care for them?

"we dont do duvets"...
To be honest a lot of Airlines have always done this, there is only the low cost carriers like Easy Jet that don't have this policy. You just have to make sure you check in at departures when it opens and you will be almost guaranteed a seat together, without paying up front for one !! :)

Matt
And now increasing numbers of airlines are doing it. Children will need to be seated next to a parent, but where there are 2 parents travelling and 1 child, it may well be that one parent is separated from the rest of the party.

I expect that soon we'll have to pay if we want our seat cleaned before we sit in it, or perhaps we will be expected to pay a toilet tax charge...

that is ridiculous.
i say we vote with our feet and not let them get away with it.

This is a bit of a rant. Which airline, and what are the conditions where one has to pay the fee? I know that Tiger airlines is offering a similar service for AUD5 per sector for normal seating and AUD25 for premium seating (exit row). I expect that other low cost airlines will have similar arrangements. GBP24 sounds a bit over the top.

Low cost airlines are not the first to extract a premium for premium seating. I have booked a tour with a UK based bus company where you can pay to have the front seats. Other companies rotate people around the bus for longer trips, but on this one, the front seat pax had paid for the privilege.

I guess that the airlines know that if you really want to sit next to someone, then you will pay a premium over a cheap base fare provided you are still getting a better price than going to a full service carrier.

I think that is disgusting, it is becoming harder and harder for normal working people to afford holidays.

We are being forced to stay in this expensive country, and working all the hours god sends. What is going to happen is that more and more people are not going to take time off, they are going to be signed off work for stress, and it will cost the government millions.

You will see a turn around not long from now, mark my words.

priority boarding with ryanair is only €3 per section. who is charging that price? anyway, you could queue early to get on straight after the priority boarders.
