Why are cabin lights dimmed for take off and landings on air flights?

Its for safety. If you take off and have an accident then the their are lights on the floors which lead you to emergency exits. Its easier to see them if you need to exit the plane in a hurry!

Its to ensure visibility outside the aircraft. Cabin lights especially at night reflect off the windows making it almost impossible to see outiside.

Take Offs and Landings are the most crucial part of any flight and visbility outside (for the passengers) is very important.

If any passenger notices anything they can inform the cabin crew.

It's a safety issue so your eyes are more accustomed to the dark since the main cabin lights would possibly go out in the event of an emergency during landing. Also it makes it easier to see outside the windows to spot danger in the event an evacuation is necessary.

If it ant Boeing I ant going .
Frogs fly you are completely wrong.................The other person with the husband is a pilot is correct.

In one word: Safety!
It's all about "Safety at 37,000ft...Above and beyond!"
The primary role of a Flight Attendant is safety and security on board the Aircraft.

as others have mentioned above, its for safety. so our eyes can adjust with the difference contrast on the lights outside and inside the aircraft.. in case of an emergency, our eyes can see the emergency doors, otherwise our eyes will still need time to adjust and it will be too late for us to escape the wtv incident..

I was a Flight Attendant for 13 years and we were instructed to dim the lights for a night flight and to keep them on when landing during the day.

The interior lighting should match outside as much as possible for take-off and landing, which is helped by opening the shades, which was required too. We had to adjust the cabin lighting accordingly to outside conditions.

This means time isn't lost during an evacuation when people are either blinded by the outside light or need a second to adjust to the dark. It can't be matched exactly but even a slight adjustment either way can help.

Please let me remind you that in an emergency evacuation, do NOT grab any of your bags. As soon as the plane comes to a complete stop, follow crew members', and only crew members', instructions. If you are supposed to get out, do so and don't take anything with you. .

Hopefully that's information you never need to use! Just a small public service message...that could save your life!

Don't be afraid to ask the crew any emergency questions next time you fly. We spend hundreds of hours doing emergency training, most of it is information we'll never actually use in our careers so most F/A's are happy to answer anything you're curious about.

not too sure about the lights being dimmed but i know the window blinds have to be up so the crew can see if theres Debris or anything laying on the runway don't know how they can see that tho because they always sit facing the rear of the plane ! xx

Uuh mine wern't dimmed for take off or landing, they turned them off. They turned them off except the personal ones during the night so we could sleep.
I think it's so they don't over use fuel? Not sure! good question.

its the same for any vehical. cars use more fuel if they have the A/C left on even the heated screens. so im assuming it would be the same for the aeroplane

lol at the thumbs down. atleast explain your argument against
!

I don't know about those other answers even the one from the person with the "husband is a pilot"!

I personally asked this question as my husband and I were boarding our flight to Las Vegas! The attendant and the pilot both answered it for me! As I was told...an airplane needs a lot of power to take off and land, A LOT more than actually flying. The lights are dimmed or turned off so they have the electrical power to get the engines up to full power and to have the power to raise or lower the landing gear as well as all other electrical power needed to take off or land! An airplane is a very large vehicle and needs a lot of power!

Have you ever noticed for example that if you put your car in cruise and it starts to go uphill the engine revs higher and the lights inside the car dim a bit! I just went on a trip to NY city( a 7 hour drive from where I live) and on the way home it was dark. The first couple of times this happened(the dimming of the lights) it startled my sister as she had never driven so far with the cruise on and didn't understand what was happening and I had to explain it to her.

Unfortunately, since I am not a pilot I cannot tell you everything electrical that the airplane needs for the take offs and landings but that is what the pilot and attendant told me!
