Why are normal people scared of flying?

I am afraid of flying but I have done so much and instead of getting better, I am getting worst, I hate it and now I have developed fear of airports.. I have flown thousands and thousands of miles (our children and grandies live in the US) but it is not a nice travel experience.

I am just the same as you, I've just come back from the USA and was a nervous wreck all the way (even though the doctor prescribed me really strong tranquillisers). The more I fly the worse it seems to be getting but I am determined not to give in to it. I think the fear is because it is very unnatural to be several thousand feet in the air in a metal tube. I also think my fear has something to do with a loss of control and that if something did happen I wouldn't be able to do anything about it. I've tried hypnosis and loads of other things but nothing makes it any better and now, because it's so bad medication is the only answer.

you get worse the more you do it? that's odd most people overcome there fears the more they fly... You may want to see a therapist. I'm not knocking you but it sounds like you may have some issues and if you truly want to get over it that may be your best bet.

it's much much more likely you'll be killed in a car crash than an airplane crash. Airplanes are actually very safe. Nowadays it is easy to get nervous at the airport because of the extra security

When you are flying, try to bring an interesting book, magazines, or just think about something peaceful.

There are some psychological programs to make people lose their fear of flight but hopefully you won't need to go much further than an interesting book for the flight.

A lot of it is lack of control. You have no control at all with what happens in an a/c.

i understand what you mean. my grandparents live in spain so it isnt even a long flight but i dont like it. its a very stressfull experience and you have no control the whol time you are on the plane horrible.

but best of luck if you are flying soon,

I haven't flown that much, but I grew up very, very close to an airport. I thought I'd like it, but I don't, really. It's a complete lack of control thing, plus it's noisy (well, it is if you fly the cheaper airlines). I know there's no getting out of the cabin, so it's a little bit of claustrophobia too, I guess. I don't remember if I was more freaked out the first time I flew or the second time.

I don't mind the take off and the landing just don't like being up there maybe its because we are not in control. It is still the safest form of transport..

Because most people don't know anything about planes or flying. Fear comes from the unknown. Get a book and learn more about it. The more you know, the less scared you will get. That will help with any fear. People get scared because they don't know anything about whatever they're scared of.

Just relax.Have confidence in the aircraft and its crew.Pilots are highly skilled and love their jobs.Remember they want to get there safely as much as you do.

Phobias have an extraordinary power over us. The brain is the most powerful organ in the human body, some men would disagree. However, seek psychological help through your local airport. Many people offer courses for those with a fear of flying. basically our negative perceptions are palced with the realities of flying and are reinforced positively.

For the very same reason that normal fish are afraid to take a long walk on the beach.

Same thing for birds in space.

g-day!

The only normal people are people you don't know very well.

We've all got our flaws. And we've all got our fears. If it's really bad, you should probably get a professional medical opinion. You could have some sort of anxiety disorder. Go see a psychiatrist or a therapist, and see what they would advise for you. Traveling should be fun!

I don't really like it so I don't do much of it, I am one of those people who think if we were meant to be up there we'd have wings. Same thing goes for the water I won't get on a ship(that could have something to do with the fact that I can swim) which some people think is crazy since I am from a beautiful Island .Fact is fear is fear you deal or you don't.

Don't worry Flying is a doddle, it's the crashing that kills you.
