Why are people so nice on airplanes?

Everytime I fly I have great conversations with the people around me. But outside the airport or my significant other, I never run into people who are so friendly. What's the deal? Are people just making conversation to kill time?

I think that when people know that they're going to be stuck in an enclosed space for a few hours with strangers, they'd prefer not to piss eachother off (hence, try to be friendly). That, plus the fact that there isn't really anything better to do

I think it could be out of nervousness.

I haven't flown anywhere by plane in quite a while so I wouldn't be able to tell what the difference is.

I think people are afraid of making the wrong sort angry and snap for no reason, so they just act really friendly to hopefully prevent that.

There is two parts to a question like this as there are people .The first is fear which a certain percentage of people have to deal with while flying on a permanent basis and non permanent basis and which by talking and being social curbes the thought of an aviation disaster. The second part of the question is a natural occurring chemical produced by the body and it is called adrenaline and this is a wonderful sensation produced by the human body and intern activate other chemicals in the body to produce a felicitous affect. It is the same as riding a roller coaster as some people live for ride and some scream but are still content.

people are talking to kill time, and they all share a common threat of death by gravity

well, after 9/11 people probably don't want to go around pissing people off on the plane because you never know if theyre gonna do something stupid like blow it up.

or maybe its to pass the time

It's a psychological thing - flying makes people nervous so they talk to distract themselves.

You're all stuck in a metal tube, so you might as well make the best of the situation.

However, I've had my share of people who are as big of a donkey's butt as they are outside the plane. You've been lucky.
