Why did I have to go through the air-puffer machine at the airport?

I recently traveled out of country from SFO. At the security checkpoint, they made my sister and I pass through the air-puffer machine (I'm not sure of the official name)...

Nobody in front or back of us went through it, and there was nothing wrong with our baggage...

Anybody ever experience this? Why was it just two of us? We're both college students, and we were dressed fine (not too fancy or poorly)...I was curious why we had to go through because we certainly didn't have any bombs or dandruffs/dust on our jacket...

Interesting answers...I'm pretty sure I didn't smell bad! And looking suspicious? We aren't anorexic or druggie-looking at all...

Anyway, thanks for all those with serious answers...random check sounds like the right one.

The machine takes a sample of the air surrounding your bodies. If you have any illegal or illicit items the machine will be able to chemically identify them. Also, if you had been doing something illegal such as handling high explosives, then the residual residue would show up on the scan and you could be flagged for further examination or interrogation. This is a random screening and not something specifically targeted at you.

They pick random people

Bee
Probably just a random check.

they go though this progress to such for gunpowder, drugs, anthrax, and any other dangerous stuff. they have that there to make your flight a safer trip and having no worrys on your flight :)

Qwyrx
Sometimes they randomly select people (say, every tenth person/group in line). Alternatively, they may have had some reason to believe that there was a threat from people who looked like you.

maddymay
just a random check

check your boarding pass was it coded SSSS?
thats going be a clue to more security
when did you buy you ticket how did you pay for (cash ?)
also sometimes it just luck of the draw
(I myself went though that same machine at SFO that
was because i was traveling same day and paid cash (travelers checks
and my boarding pass was coded SSSS
so i had a longer "visit" with TSA

to see if you have drugs

maybe because they wanted to if you really want to know why don't you call the airport and explain your case and ask them y that happened

the TSA randomnly selects people for extra screening...it had nothing to do with you personally. You just hit the lottery on that one.

maybe u just stink! and the airline did not want u to offend other passengers,so they made you go through the (ahem) bomb residue machine, which is just a cover up for bad b.o.

Simaholic
You probably just looked suspicious to them. Mostly it is young college students that are tricked to carry drugs to other countries for a small fee. My poor brother gets stopped every time he flies. He says that he is so nervous knowing he might be stopped that they stop him for looking suspicious. Maby you guys looked a bit nervous or something.
