Why do flight attendants require passengers to raise the window shades during takeoff and landing?
What good could this possibly do? Additional Details Apparently some of you (e.g. Coral) don't fly internationally. I fly in Asia a lot and every major carrier I've been on requires us to raise the window shades during takeoff and landing.
Statistically speaking, more crashes occur during take-off and landing, so it seems counter-intuitive to raise the shades. They would prefer the inmates on the plane to be in blissful ignorance. That's why they have you breathe oxygen during sudden descent, to keep you calm so you don't panic before you perish in a horrific fireball. Haven't you seen Fight Club?

So if the plane crashes you can orientate yourself.

It allows the flight crew to better see the wings of the plane to look for things like ice formation, birds, debris, or mechanical problems. And probably so that the stewards and stewerdesses can tell when the landing will occur so they can brace for it and not go flying should they be standing for some reason at the time.

So you can tell if your about to crash. If the window shades were up you wouldn't see the ICBM coming at you. Or the lake.

I have NEVER been on a flight where this has been done. EVER. and ive been on planes more than on the ground for the past 7 years....
i think you have the window shade confused with the seat back, which you do have to pull up during take-off and landing. and this is for YOUR safety, in case anything goes wrong.
