Why do flight attendants spray pesticides inside airliners?

Why do Planes spray pesticides inside airliners? Isnt it dangerous for the passengers even if its sprayed before they board?

Say what?
not only it kills all bugs and other organisms, it is also a mandatory requirement of certain countries the aircraft is flying into.

anitaS
This is a legal requirement although not in all countries. Definately has to be done from Africa, tropical places.

Pauly
Bugs and rodents could be transfered by a person and/or cargo.

EHFAR
Yes, it can happen on a domestic flight if your aircraft came from an international flight. We (flight attendants) don't spray the plane ourselves. It doesn't happen 5 minutes prior to boarding, so relax.

Paul McDonald
It's only done when a plane is entering a country--THe only one that I"ve seen do it is Australia inbound flights, but there are probably more.

It's to prevent the introduction of bad critters and bugs to the country. It's basically harmless to people (unless you opend up your mouth and sprayed it right in).

Never happens on US Domestic flights...

its definitely dangerous, but its far better than dealing with crawling insects

darklydrawl
They do it to try and kill any bugs or lice the passengers maybe carrying. And yep, it is probably not that good for you.

To kill any organisms brought in from another country.

fisherwoman
Probably because people are served meals, and people bring fruits and other snack foods aboard, which attract rodents and other pests. It would be no more dangerous than if you ate dinner at the local diner, they use pesticides and sometimes live traps in restaurants/diners/cafes all over the world, to control this same problem.

In the summer of 2004 I was travelling to Bangladesh on Gulf Air. After we had finished boarding the flight attendent sprayed on both aisles twice. I had to cover my mouth.

mis_anona
Apparently, like most health-related situations, the long-term threats are less important than the short-term ones.
