Why do stewardesses offer hot towels on aeroplanes?

Okay, my first travel in 9 years. I sit at the very back of the plane (and watch the stewardesses, especially one with short reddish hair) and the plane takes off and the stewardesses get out of their seats, gather a bundle of hot towels and say, "Do you want a hot towel?" (Smiling, of course.) My sister said she got one, and she thinks you're supposed to put them on your face, but she had makeup on so she didn't want to!

Does anybody know? Is it supposed to help when the plane takes off or something?

Suppose just to freshen u up. Saves them providing shower facilities.

to wake you up once the plane lands if you are feeling tired

Chav Princess
Just for cleaning your hands and face. They're really quite nice.

H²O
The towels are to refresh you before long flights. It keeps you moisturized from dryness in the air.

I think it's just a courtesy. When I flew to Aus a few months ago, these were particularly welcome, as you don't really have much opportunity to wash except in those tiny little toilets, and after several hours a clean hot towel is exactly what you want to de-germ hands and freshen up a tired face!

Liggy Lee
They are hot towels?!!!!

Oh dear, I have been eating them for the past 10 years, thinking they were spring rolls!

Only joking, think its refreshing if you have a quick wipe down with one.

Maybe the air hostesses want all the ladies to wipe off their make up to make themselves look better in comparison. Like an ego boost!

Private_Jet_Charter
Actually, the hot towel can help clear up any congestion when wiped on the face to avoid the uncomfortable ear pain that comes with pressurization of the plane. I highly recommend it especially if you have allergies or a cold.
