Why do the window blinds have to stay up on a plane when it takes off and lands?

It's so the emergency services can see if anyone is still on the plane (possibly unconscious). If your window blind is closed they will have to risk their lives to break in and save you (which is a bit selfish if you've already escaped!)

On the seatbelt subject - it's to stop bodies being thrown around the plane in case of impact. As ice says - it keeps the carnage to a minimum and aids identification.

So the pilot can see..

I asked a flight attendant this once and she said that it was so rescuers could see in if there was a crash. Makes sense to me.

That's a very good question, I'd love to know the answer too...I'm just waiting for a call back from my highly experienced travel agent friend, hopefully he might have some idea...I'll keep you posted.

Dimming the lights helps your eyes adjust to darkness, so if anything happens and it goes dark, you're not suddenly blind while dashing for the exits. Also it makes the emergency path/exit lights more visible. These might be the only lights you see in an emergency. And as with the shades, it allows you to see outside for orientation. With the cabin lights burning brightly, the glare would make this impossible.

"Q: Why do I have to open my window shade for landing? And why are the cabin lights dimmed?

You are asked to raise your shade so you can see through the window. Not for the view, but to help you remain oriented (which way is up, etc.) if there's an accident. Further, it lets you see what hazards exist outside (fires, debris and such), which would be important during an evacuation. Additionally it lets light into the cabin and makes it easier for rescuers to see inside.

because that way you can make sure that there aren't any gremlins on the wings... or clowns.

The take off and landings are the most dangerous parts of flying. The windows are left open so that the cabin crew can see if there is any damage to the plane (flames coming from engines etc.) so that they can alert the pilot.

They also dim the cabin lights during this time so you can see outside easier and also so that peoples eyes adjust to the dark in case of an emergency and the plane needs to be evacuated in the dark.

if a plane is going to crash it usally happens during take off or landing. so its best to close the windows so u are then unaware of whats going on ha
