That is a procedure that most airlines have adopted into their policies because if there were to be an accident it is likely it will happen during take off and landing, so the window shades being open allow if an accident occurs the passengers and flight crew can see through the windows and access the situation outside of the aircraft as well as first responders to view into the aircraft to access the situation inside (i.e. fire, etc.) |

Its unfortunately to do with the rare cases where there is an incident (crash etc) where people need to make an emergency exit - the shades are kept up so you know more about what is happening outside - maybe to go for the left exit as opposed to right.
Its also if there is an emergency and have to leave the plane quick - your eyes are more adjusted to the outside conditions - ie if its dark your eyes will adjust quicker if you've been looking out of the window (as opposed to being in a lights on plane then jumping out into the dark).
You can if you wish keep yours closed when your about to go - but they prefer them open. |

it is a federal safety requirement to pull up the window shades before takeoff and landing.
the logic with this federal safety requirement is that the most critical phase of the flight is during takeoff and landing. this is the phase were most accidents/incident/crashes happens. you are ask to pull up the window shades because incase something happen to your flight God forebid... you will see immediately what is going on outside of the plane. do you exit on the right side or in the leftside??? what is there in the left side??? is their FIRE??? how about in the right side??? where will I be safe to exit??? when your window shade is open... you can immediately see...
and when a plane crashes passengers and crew onboard should be evacuated immediately in water you have 90 seconds before the plane submerge in the water. on land more or less the same before the plane explodes. you dont have time to pull up your window shades after the plane crashes....
These Federal Safety Requirements are made for the protection of people onboard any Aircraft and must be enforce in all flights and must be followed by passengers.... Because these Safety requirement will save your life |

You must keep the window shades open at te time of take-off and landing. This is for security reasons. While take-off and landing, if anything goes wrong wit the aircraft, everybody should be able to notice it and report to the captain. The captain may instruct the passengers to open the emergecy exit door and everybody can move out of the aircraft. |

It is not something that every airline makes you do. But the reason behind it is, in case there is an emergency evacuation.... you need to be able to assess the situation outside. If there is debris or fire outside an exit, you would not go that way. So if the window shades are up, it is easier to see what is going on outside. |

In Indian flights they explain that it is needed from the visibility point of view. If something is going to happen, seeing it coming may give you time to prepare. |

.....and why do they do the life jacket under your seat script on flights that don't pass over any water? |

just in case the pilot and co pilot are blind.... you have to pull up the blinds so the passengers can see whats going on...and when they all start screaming the pilot pulls the stick back and takes off...on landing they normally use a dog they lower it out of the door with a rope and when the dog yelps they know they have reached landing level...I hope my answer has got rid of any fear you might have had |

its probably so because that is the time the body postures are required to be still. in order for passengers to move least, they are asked to put on their seatbelts and shut the window lids for least distraction |
