because the baggage unload/loading and fuelling is done on the right as you are disembarking. like a pitstop. |

If you disembarked on the right side you'd fall on your head. |

I never really noticed that, but that's so cool! I think it's just the design of the plane, and if different planes had different exit sides, then when landing at the gates it would be hard to adjust the gates for every plane. |

The plane need to be refuelled and cargo loaded which is easier to do on the side where passengers are not boarding. As major airports allow passengers to board direct from the terminal building (rather than passengers walking onto the airfield), a standard had to be agreed. This is so that terminal buildings could be built and airfield road traffic could be arranged appropriately. This explains why you always embark and disembark on the same side of the plane. I do not know why left was chosen as the standard. |

You embark on the left too. |

All of the jetbridges are set up so that you plane and deplane from the left. The right side is used mainly for catering. Also the galleys up front are usually on the right hand side of the aircraft. It wouldn't make sense for passengers to be traipsing through the galley for boarding when the flight attendant is trying to set up the galley for the service. In fact he or she couldn't and then you would be the first to complain that you didn't get your drink in a timely manner. |

All the toilet outlets are on the right of an aircraft---and it would be particularly 'niffy' in a warm climate decanting from the right.
Also-most cabin crew are left handed and so are their families.
Thank you for reading this---have a good flight. |

Because Americans drive on the wrong side of the road, therefore they want a semblance of normality when they get off an aeroplane! I grudgingly admit that they were the first nation to make air-transport work so we have to give them this minor victory! |
