Chewing helps to equalize the pressure differential between the inside of your head and the plane's pressurized cabin. When the equalization happens, you hear a pop.

Any gum will do. It's moving your jaw a lot that helps to pop your ears. Sometimes you can pop your ears by making a big yawn. The Eustachian tube connects your middle ear to your throat to help maintain a constant internal pressure so you don't blow out your eardrums. Moving your jaw can sort of unblock the tube and allow pressure to equalize.

it makes u swallow, which creates sucktion and can help your ears drain (pop)

It's not the gum, it's the chewing. If you don't have gum, pretending like you do works too. The chewing motion helps to relieve the pressure in people's ears.

And my ears have never popped. I grew up in a valley and regularly travelled up and down mountains as a child, so my ears were tuned to automatically make up for changes in pressure.

Hmm, I've never heard that.

But i know that the higher the altitude, the lower the atmospheric pressure. When the fluids in your ears are exposed to a different amount of pressure they expand and contract and it makes a popping sound. My ears pop whenever I drive over mountains with or without gum.

Chewing may effect the amount of pressure on the fluids in your ears.

Ear nose and throat doctors specialise in all three because they are connected. it's the swallowing action that helps clear your ears although you may not be swallowing bubble gum you would be swallowing the saliva created by chewing so the more you swallow hard the more likely your ears will pop
