Why does an airtrip takes 6 hrs from NYC to LAX and only 5 from LAX to NYC?
There must be scientific reason for that. Flying from east to west takes longer than flying from west to east WHY?
It has nothing to do with the time zones. Its the jet stream. You face tail winds....meaning it pushes the plane faster west to east and you encounter head winds...slows the plane east to west.

Air Current if i'm not mistaking...
Differs from East to West coast

Try time zones.

The jet stream, Although I think you have this backwards, as the jet stream travels from west to east, which makes flights from the west to east shorter than flights from the east to the west.
ez-travel
the answer is simple , when a airplane traveling from east to west it's going against the wind ( Vs. tail wind ) there for the plane speed will slow down, and vies versus from west to east with a helping tail wind it will allow the plane to gain more speed therefor it takes less time.
tomcut2000
I think it is because of the jet stream
Bitburger PilsMan
The Jet stream. It can run over 100mph west to east, giving the airplane more groundspeed.
NightHowler
Its because of the change in time zones. It actually takes the same time to fly....but appears different because NYC and LAX are in different time zones.

headwind...tailwind...so many elements

It is all about the wnd and currents. I flew roundtrip from San Francisco - Paris and it was 10 hours on the way there, 12 hours back.
ilessthanthreeyou
because of the winds

Maybe the route they take is different. Or maybe the airplane has to circle and get in line to land at LAX
