Why does it less expensive to buy an international flight closer to the date you want to leave? |
I'm looking at scheduling a flight to Ireland. (I live in the US)
I noticed that if I book the flight now for April, it'll cost like $1,000.
But if I make the leaving date closer, it cost like $650.00.
Why is this? |

Most likely the airline believes it will be busier in April than the other date you were looking at. If you booked a hotel on the beach in New Jersey now it would be cheap because they know it won't be busy. If you book now for August, they know they'll be busy and price accordingly. |

Try buying it three days before you travel next time. You'll regret it. |

the miracle of inventory control software! If you want to nail down your tickets for a long time away, the airline wants your $1000 to guarantee it. Closer to the time, the price may go up, or it may go down, depending on whether the airline has anticipated too much or too little demand.
The fact that you can get an earlier flight cheaper means that the airline is expecting softer demand for that flight.
(also, maybe spring break is a factor?) |

This is rather unusual, but it could be because the airline has trouble filling its planes to their capacity, and they make last minute booking cheaper. but im not exactly sure |

its the other way round for me. Lol |

I thought the opposite was true, but maybe your less expensive ticket is an off season for the airlines. |

because they need to sell the tickets, so by the time the flight comes theyre really cheap, cause otherwise theyll have empty seats, which is a waste o fmoney. better little, than none at all. |

I think you're misinterpreting. It's not true that flights are generally cheaper closer to the date of travel. But it is true that fares are lower in the winter than in the spring, and I think that's what you're seeing. |

Low season in Ireland is November - March which is why the airfare goes up after this. Don't just call the airlines for a fare. Search all resources. It's a lot of work but you might save some money |
