Why dont more people tip Flight Attendants? |
If you come across a friendly, above average Flight Attendant, why not tip them? They're bartenders, trash collecters, problem solvers, food servers, coat takers, pillow getters, and usually great listeaners. Now, we tip individual people who do those individual jobs, so why dont we ever tip Flight Attendants? |

Because people have no idea what Flight Attendants really do. They get yelled at and verbally abused when flights are delayed, heaven forbid canceled. They serve even when there is turbulence and we end up with bruises covering our bodies from passengers who can't manage their elbows, knees, feet and baggage in an appropriate manner. We deal with children who scream and the people who thinks it is our fault that they are screaming. Pilots need things, gate agents shove angry people our way just to get rid of them. and yes folks we ARE away from our families sometimes for MONTHS at a time and make no more than the average theme park employee. How is that people think that Flight Attendants make so much true we make around 18-20 an hour for the first couple of years, here is the catch we only work 80 hours in a MONTH! No factor in that the only places we have to eat are airports and restaurant since we are always on the go, and the meager "allowance of 1.30 an hour for food and incidentals" doesnt cover much when an airport meal costs $12. But airline employees have benefits right?! No, our families can fly stand-by, but with flights so oversold they rarely get on. and to be honest some places first year flight attendants with the low rate above make more than a first year PILOT. Think about that. To answer your question, public perception. People think we are made of money because we smile all the time and handle problems with grace and finesse, but we are not made of money. I have received several offered tips, some as high as $50 and small tokens of appreciation such as key chains and t-shirts, all very nice. It shows that there are people who are in the know of what the job really is. Its not leisure, its not fun fun fun, its service, and really i'd lend it more to servitude. Funny, you tip the guy who helps destroy your liver and waistline ( bartender) but not the person who may potentially save your life in a plane emergency..... odd huh? |

They aren't just making $2.50/hr. Their job keeps them away from their families and have quite a bit more stress than just serving dinner or other service jobs. Because of this, they are paid a decent salary to begin with by the airlines.
Wanting passengers to pay for this stuff is nuts. I might tip them is something bad happened, say I spilled my food/drink all over the place and they had to clean it up... or some other extreme circumstance. But handing out cash to people for doing their job is becoming way too common and I couldn't see myself tipping a flight attendent for a typical flight's services.
Edit: I think starting flight attendants don't make much money yearly because they arent logging as many hours as a seasoned attendant. I bet most make 30-40k and its probably easy to make more if you have a good record and want to be in the air more often. |

Because flight attendants don't make $2 an hour like restaurant waitstaff who actually *do* depend on tips for their total salary. Show me a flight attendant who makes $2 an hour, does their job extremely well, and I'll show them a nice tip. |

Flight attendants receive decent pay. They don't need tips to subside their paycheck like food servers or bartenders do. They get minimum wages. Flight attendants are paid union wages.) |

It would be great if they could accept tips.
Think about it, a plane with 200 people on it, several times a day?
You could be bringing home $600 a day in tips!!! And thats just at a buck per person. |

Stella doesn't know that starting f/a's at Eagle make around $15k....I am sure many could qualify for food stamps....
