I'm looking to travel roundtrip to NYC from Minneapolis over spring break. About a month ago, it was $280 and now for the same departure it's risen to around $450-500. Do prices rise due to the holiday time?
The airlines will also blame the 'Economic Crisis' but thats just an excuse.
It may also be because a lot of seats have sold at the time you want to fly. It may just be a shrotage of seats.

Airfares rise according to that age old rule of whatever the traffic will bear. The seasons effect the timing of course. The price of jet fuel is a part of the price increase equation as is an ample amount of greed. The extra charges for baggage, the good seats and dry sandwiches add even more to the cost of flying these days. These "nickle and dime" fees are agravating and chincy, but I suppose they save the airlines money and will probably never go away.

Just wait. After the holidays, the US airlines are anticipated a brutal 1Q 2009. Airfares will be dropping.

Of course they do. It`s all about offer vs demmand. The more people that wants to travel on a given date, the higher the prices. Now add the ´crisis´factor on top and you have the reason why prices are going up: airlines are collapsing and closing down routes, which means competition gets weaker and airlines can afford to increase prices as passengers have limited choice of travel.

Yes they indeed are adjusted according to the supply/demand economy :-)
What you can do is to check other days of the week for departure/return. Most often Monday through Wednesday are cheaper.

Yes airfare always goes up when it gets close to the Holidays. Thats why you should buy a ticket weeks in advance. Maybe you can find a reputable travel agency that can find you a cheaper ticket.

Your answer: OIL.
The price of Oil drives the price of airfare. While you can't control the price of oil you can save yourself money by WHEN you purchase your airfare. Farther in advance, the better. 30 days in advance is good, 14 days in advance will certainly save you more than if you wait until 7 days before departure.
...And a day or two before departure? Well...the price of Oil will dictate the full amount you will pay.

yeah but also because of petrol prices climing ever higher that means that you need to pay so they can fuel the ship we are also in a credit crunch so food and everything is higher. If i were you i would book in advance. hope this helped
