The market has driven this type of behavior. Passengers prefer lower prices to amenities or in cabin service. On average, airline ticket prices have not gone up in 20 years. No other industry has had this problem.

Fuel, wages, landing fees, rent, and all other operating expenses have gone up. Since airlines operate on such thin profit margins, they lose money on the leisure traveler and make all the profit from fees for changing dates, overweight bags, cargo, mail, and business travelers. Frontline employees know this.

Until Americans are willing to pay more for air travel to offer more amenities, higher paid/more compentent employees, just as it was during government regulation days, service will remain poor.

It is bad. Just four or five years ago you got more seat pitch and free hot meals at most major airlines! It's been bad for the employees too, the top paid airline pilot made close to $400k now it's $250k at a cargo airline, try a legacy airline like Delta and it's not much over $100k.
People just have to realize that they either get cheap fares or they have high fares and get better service. You can't have it both ways. Personally, it was the dream of some of the "Founding Fathers" of flight to make it accessible to everyone. I think low fares are doing that. But at the same time, people don't appreciate the magic of flying anymore because of the crappy airline service. Remember US Airways old slogan "USAir Begins With You"? It's time for that kind of philosophy again...oh and treating their employees better too! Well treated employees most certainly mean good customer service!

I completely agree... service in general in many facets of the hospitality industry has deteriorated over the past several years. I'm not upset about the airlines not serving food anymore, personally I never saw what the big deal was. I think people just get excited about the idea of getting something for free. Even 1st class food is barely a step above a frozen dinner with a nice presentation.

But the attitude of airline employee's these days is terrible... from the people at the ticket counters, to the gate agents and flight attendants. There ARE SOME exceptions within all the airlines, but I think Southwest and some of the other low-cost carriers have the legacy airlines beat when it comes to service. I don't get it... if they don't like to work with the public... then find a new career or in some cases... retire already!

Gosh! Its been a very long time since I flew - Probably since 12 years ago -

I always packed food in my bag cuz I never get attention on the plane! - Like you say they treat us like s***!

Since 9/11 - I stopped flying - not because of fear - They add too many restrictions and I still see on the news that people are still having problems with airlines ...

I ll stick with driving since its nice to sight see :)

Depends what airline you fly.....
I've gotten great service on some....horrible on others.....
depends how well the airline doing and how much costs they are cutting.

Because they can, and there is nothing we can do to make them act differently! There is no other airline for us to use to show our dissatisfaction!

because they can get away with it, but the ONLY airline in the U.S. that does not have wimpy service is without a doubt Continental, theyre the only one that still serves meals to their customers, their FA's are still courteous, and many other perks, but Continental beats EVERY single other U.S. airline!!! (maybe not in price, but it's worth that little extra)

What airline are you talking about Southwest and Jet Blue have great customer service. All other airlines I have flown with have been great too, just not as great as Southwest and Jet Blue.
Here are some other good ones:
Air Tran
Northwest
Delta
Continental
