Why is First Class air travel so expensive?

I'm planing a trip to London with my daughter. It's going to be just me and her, so I know it's going to be difficult. I always fly economy class and never even care to check the prices for first class ticket. But today I did, and I don't understand why the difference in price is soooooo big?
The economy class ticket to London is $550, and first class is $9900.
What do they get in first class??? I know they are a lot more comfortable there, but please... $10K?
Any ideas?
Thank you.

Aimee - I think you missed the point of my question, but thanks anyway :)
My baby is 1, so she might be one of those screaming babies :)

It is supply and demand.

Also if they built the floor plan the same from back to front and rip out the whole first class section, they could put in a lot more regular seats. It's sort of like real estate, in that the price per square foot rent goes up, but in proportionately, in part due to the added services.

There is a dedicated flight attendant up there, even on smaller planes. The ratio of flight attendants to passengers is less. The airline expense is more.

Than there is the food and drink, hot moist towels.

But it only works because some people have the money and don't have a problem spending it on first class. If nobody sprung for first class (bought those seats), it wouldn't be offered.

It's that expensive because people are willing to pay it. You don't get all that much extra, better food, free drinks, a fully reclining chair, and your personal TV, but that's about it.

First Class travel is more expensive because you are getting more perks and traveling more comfortably than if you fly coach. You have wider seats and more legroom. On most if not all First Class seats, they can recline to 180 degrees. The food is better and you receive more attention. You can go to Cathay Pacific's website and click on the "Meet Your Flight Attendants". You get a virtual tour of First Class, Business Class and Economy.

Is it worth paying that much for a First Class ticket? I guess it all depends on who you are. Some people like the idea that you are sharing your space with fewer people. Others are willing to pay extra for the comfort, especially on a long flight. I am not a big person so First Class ticket prices do not justify the price that is being charged. I flew coach from San Francisco to Singapore on Singapore Airlines. The service was excellent and the seats were not cramped.

The short answer is supply and demand.

Having flown to London on a redeye, being able to sleep comfortably in a quiet, relaxed setting has a value beyond words (the newer aircraft have lie-flat beds, more room...).

Plus, most people flying in first class are flying for work, so in effect, we're expensing the cost to the company and/or client.

There are two people that travel internationally in first class: Those who don't care how much the ticket costs, and those that upgrade from a lower class.

The first people, obviously, don't care about paying $9900. The 2nd class think they're getting a $9300 value by trading in something that costs the airline a fraction of that, so they think they're getting a great deal.

This way, the airline pleases both types of customers.

Firstly i depends where you live
im assuming you live in australia like me and i just recently traveled to london on malysa airways and on the way back thai in econemy both ways
its a 6 hrs flight and then 12 hrs and is a living hell!!!
you cant sleep the food is really really bad (stay away from anything with filling you will regret it)
the service was lovely and the people arnt too bad but youre all cramed together and and at one point i had some random old guy sleeping on me!
first class the seats are twice the size there are no screaming babies or arguments and you can lay down
though its not exacty worth 10k and i wouldnt go fist class unless some one else was paying
buy yourself a neck pillow and suffer through

(tough your probly a bit closer so some of the stuff wont be relevant but i hope it helped)
