?
Cos on the way you dont know where you are going but on the way back you do!

because it is quicker to get to somewhere you don't want to go

when you are going somewhere new, your more likely to be excited, so your brain is more active and you are using all the time to see new things that you have seen on TV, or have read about in books or magazines. On the journey home you are more likely to be tired, and your brain is less active, so you are resting without really noticing what is going on around you as much, thus making the journey feel quicker.

Because, like a car journey you are familiar with the end of the journey. When you are enjoying something time flies past, the opposite happens on returning.

You're right but it depends upon where you are going and the mode of transport.

For example, if you are traveling from East to the West, the journey- whether by air or road or rail or sea- will take longer due to the rotation of the Earth. As you travel westwards, the rotation takes your destination away from you- making it longer to reach.

In the opposite direction, West to East- the destination comes closer to you- due to the Earth's rotation and hence, the journey takes a little lesser time.

And then of course, there's the psychological factor: We are all happy to return home after the excitement of the trip, for whatever reason- business or liesure and hence, time seems to fly while on the way back.

Although the last answer is partially correct but not the main reason why....

It has to do with winds... Flying eastbound, the airplane gets tail winds which increases the speed of the plane (I remember flying 1150 kmph) and the opposite westbound...

For example my flight from Istanbul to Bangkok took about 8h30mins but my return flight was about 10h30mins.

your mind is less aprehensive and excited
so speeding up time (perception)

bumblecherry
Coz it's all downhill...!

lilostitchfans
first is the mental thing. you are excited when going somewhere and it feels much longer and boring. Coming back, you've had a good time and you're not bothered about coming home. Also on some routes, tailwinds are so strong the return journey is actually faster!
