Why is it mandated to turn off electronic devices on a plane during take-offs and landings?

This usually applies only to items that can send a signal: cell phones, blue tooth devices, etc.

Most cell phones continually send a signal to the nearest cell tower, and/or have a GPS capability. That can interfere with the navigational avionics of an airliner. When you are sitting inside the shell of the aircraft, the signal can bounce around, and even become stronger. Times that by 50+ people using their cell phones if it were allowed.

Don't pay any attention to the Myth Busters episode that dealt with this. Their testing methodology was all wrong.

It is a safety precaution because during the departure and arrival phases of flight, communication and navigation equipment are very important to the flight deck crew. While this equipment (radios, navaids, datalinks, etc) is necessary during all phases of flight, the arrival and departure phases are the most critical. This is because more frequent communications are made between ATC (Air Traffic Control) and the pilots, and because some of the instruments (especially in poor weather conditions) are used to guide the aircraft down to the runway.

As a safety precaution.

Its better to be safe then sorry...especially while on a plane.

Well, I keep my digicam running during my plane's takeoff. Its so cool when you're on the window seat!

There is fear that emissions from phones, computers might interfere with airplane's controls, which are all electronic.

If you do not "TURN OFF" your electronic devices, you interrupt the aircraft communication systems. It may lead to crash. Think of other life on board.

There's been evidence that shows some electronic devices can interfere with signals to the airplane... and during take offs and landings - communication and accurate assessments of their surroundings is VITAL to the safety of the plane.

Be cause cellphones are always trying to connect with the nearest tower!!! messing up the control tower comunication!!! so that why they have mostly all electorincs off to make sure that they don't try to connect with anything!!!

That's a load of crap. The electronics have no affect on the aircraft controlls. They do have limited effect on communications, but it is mainly for the same reason that they are not allowed on movie theaters. They are an annoyance in public and you can feakin wait until you are off the plane to make your call.

Hell, when I was in my 20's nobody knew what the hell a cell phone was and we all flew along just fine.
