Oldies from Country Victoria

Why is it that when a plane has an emergency passengers are asked to adopt the brace position ?

When landing in an emergency the crew require that all passengers take the brace position with their hands on the back of the seat in front and head lowered. where there is no seat infront bend forward and place head between your legs.

you aren't the sharpest knife in the drawer are you?

Halsey
If you hit something the impact will effect you less in the brace position. When you put your head between your legs it will affect your neck less if you jerk forward.

You don't want a flying suitcase taking your head off, do you?

You don't want your melon flopping around with all that crap flying around the cabin.

it's to protect yourself in the case of a rough landing

It is to protect your body from any major problems such as slamming your head into the seat in front of you, etc.

Techwing
The brace position makes passengers less likely to flail about and suffer injury on impact, and it helps protect the head and neck from injury.

so that the brace position can be adopted

azreale
It's been shown that this protects the head from objects that could fly out of the overhead compartments. And you know what happens to any objects that are loose when an impact occurs right? They become projectiles that can do lots of damage even if the object is small and seems harmless.

Supposedly it's to minimize injury, but I think it's just to give the passengers a sense that they have some control over a situation that they really have no control over.

protoham
That is where you place your head between your knees and kiss you a$$ good bye.

well, transportatiotn authorities require that airlines (and cars) are tested for how people's bodies are thrashed during an accident. studies show that in most cases, this is the best position to be in, in the event of a crash. if the plane is going straight into a mountain, then of course the position is pointless, but in the event that it is an easy crash (like the hudson river one), it's probably a perfect example of that position working

SoulEvolution
so if there is too much turbulance, or youre landing is messy, your body wont be launched out of your seatbelt somehow, and you wont be shaken, and possibly smack your head onto something, its a safety thing

jesustrey1
It has been found that this position give the best chance of surviving a plane crash

i always thought it had something to do with the neck.
I guess with impact your neck can snap....

i have no idea.

to give people a sense of security , but in all reality all it will do is keep u from getting splashed or glassed I've been in many many close close calls, literally having wings an inch off the runway. I never get into that crash position because I like to know what's going on.

leighton.
so you protect your head and stomah, where your most valubal oragans are, also if you clench your mussles, that makes thing's that hit into you (say a shard of glass) no go in so deep, or hit the bone.
