Will most major airlines allow me to bring a standard sized folk guitar in a case along on board as a carry on

Would a standard accoustic guitar in it's case be elligible as carry-on luggage on most airlines?

If it has to go below in the luggage compartment, can anyone give a few travel tips for the safety and well being of the instrument?

i doubt it not only is it irregularly shaped but it's too large. a guitar case is bigger than my suitcase, which is also too large to carry on. i would say to make sure the case is a hard case. if it isn't, anything can damage it. if your worried about it getting bumped around, i suggest a case that has padding on the inside of it. i see your concern, and maybe it would be a good idea to call the airport service first to ask, but i don't think they'll let you carry such a large carry-on onto the plane. Where would it go? It probably wouldn't fit well in the overhead compartment and not anywhere else. I really don't think you have much to worry about as long as the case of your guitar is sturdy and padded. suitcases don't get thrown and bumped around as much as people think they do. most airlines are good about handling baggage carefully.

If you're really desperate, you can put a 'FRAGILE' or 'HANDLE WITH CARE' sticker on the case.

another source tells me that american airlines lets you carry it on, but they check it so you might want to even remove the strings if it's a different airline, because they want to make sure nothing is inside the body of the guitar.

Yeah, fly from Birmingham Airport and they won`t even notice you`ve got it!

Because of the size of it, unfortunately you can not carry it on as cabin luggage. My only suggestion would be to invest (if you already have not done so) in a good quality flight case, that should stand up to the rigours of being in the hold with other baggage. Don't forget it will be insured by the airline should damage or loss occur during transit. one last word of advice - if it goes on the flight in the hold resist the temptation to put fragile stickers on the case - these stickers are generally ignored!!!!!!!!! if you know what I mean!!

Sweetie if it doesn't fit in the carry on sizer the word is no. And a guitar will not fit. So if you don't have a hard case put it in a box pack it well with bubble wrap and send it through luggage. Sorry I know how careful you want to be with you insturment.

Yes most airlines will let you travel with your guitar but check with them for a possible cost. UK security allows musical instuments even though its outside the standard luggage size.

from www.baa.com

" Can I take my musical instrument on board?
Yes. In addition to the Hand baggage allowance, one musical instrument in its case can be taken into the cabin. No items other than the instrument and its accessories can be carried in the case "

Yes it is part of your luggage put fragile on it though. I presume you mean in the baggage holder and not in the cabin. If it is the luggage holdall I don't see a problem.

no they wont but check with airline first

not sure what a folk guitar should look like but when i get ask about a regular guitar i said to them, if u past thru security check point and once on the plane its the flight attendant that u have to be super nice to b/c its up to she or he that will put ur guitar in the first or business class passenger cabin. trust me, they can find all sort of places for it. but if u can't get past the tsa and gets sent back to repack, follow the guideline the other guys have post, bubble wrap ect. btw, i am assuming ur flying on a 747?? regardless, be curteous and friendly. catch more bees with honey than vinegar, right?!?
