Would it be okay to take a bottle of wine in my suitcase when flying from from JFK Airport to Heathrow?

My husband and I are flying from John F. Kennedy Aiport to Heathrow Airport, and then up to Edinburgh airport.

We'd like to take a bottle of wine for my parents, but is alcohol permitted in check-in luggage?

Thank you.
Additional Details
Just to clarify: I'm putting it in the hold, that's why I said "suitcase" and "check-in luggage".

jetsetter
you can put it in hold luggage
but not hand luggage

admist what people say wrap it up well and cover with towel then wrap loads of bubble wrap or sellotape over towel fasten with tape

i have done this before many times nothing ever broke
obviously others didnt wrap it up well

if you buy it in duty free shop yes you can after you have cleared security you can travel with it on plane as we did within brazil and england this year

If you are checking the suitcase in, then it's ok. It won't be allowed in your hand luggage though. No liquids more than 100ml are allowed in hand luggage. Hope this helps.

taxed till i die,
Put it in hold baggage,I don't think you are allowed liquid in the cabin.

Why bother, it's dead cheap in the UK. A decent wine can be bought for £2.00, a good wine for £5.00.

silentnonrev
wine is fine, just pack it to protect it. Where it would be a nono would be 151 rum or similar, which is officially -flammable liquid...but you would have a hard time getting wine to burn....

no coz it will get broke!!

wouldn't like to say but i don't think you can...failing tat, just declare it when you get here in UK

spike77_98
only if you buy it in the airport, and I don't believe you can, atleast not in the states. You can't bring any liquids on an airplane anymore.

Misty Blue
I would not advise it.I soaked a suitcase full of expensive clothes when a bottle of Vodka broke in my case.

Just be sure to wrap it in bubble wrap, and place it in a zip lock bag, then in a box. Unless you like wine colored clothing.

My wife works for an airline, and many bottles have broken in people checked through bags.

You can take it in your case to Heathrow but then you'd have to bin it before flying to Edinburgh as you can't take any liquids on internal flights in Britain.

They do not allow anything....My Daughter a US citizen had all her makeup taken off her flying back on vacation to Manchester. Perfume her Husband had just bought her for her Birthday as well. I think the lot of them get all their Xmas presents from us...the traveller.. ! Its what I call Daylight Robbery. She is on her way home now but could not buy any gifts because she would have lost all them as well,. The worst case I saw though in New York was a Doll they took off a small child who was heartbroken....did they care...NO it is getting past all reason now..,..
